I wonder if now that Ford is involved, my friends who bought Amarok's and had nothing but trouble (in particular gearbox related) will be able to buy a reliable one

ZF unreliable? or are you talking about the explosive 10 speed in the ford?

Doubtful, the Ford eats transmissions like they're skittles.

As a previous generation Amarok owner, I must say I think the old one does generally look better than the new one... it seems to have more presence.

I will hold judgement on the Ford/VW partnership angle though, as long as there is still some VW in the base platform then I think there is room for it to be a success, so long as it isn't priced way outside of where Ford's prices are.

Every generation just gets bigger and bigger. When does it stop? When a single car takes up a double garage and 2 lanes?

FFS, am I the only one that likes a vehicle that fits in a parking bay and doesn't require a 9-point turn to get around a corner.

Thats strange I know VW DSG box are pretty reliable never had any issues and I have a 10 year old VW GTi MK6 with one that I drive the hell out of.

The main thing is dont hammer the car until engine is at operating temperature, even then give it about 5 to 10 minutes for the fluids to circulate properly and heat up.

I always have the DSG oil changed every 60 000KM and there is a filter inside the box as well.

My Audi i noticed this winter when the temperature is very cold the box feels tight but once it warms up its gets going well, gearbox oil change definitely on the cards for it.

Even the ZF box in the current "old" Amarok is damn near bullet proof.. I abused the living snot out of it this weekend doing some offroading and it just took it like a champ.

So long as you do an oil change every 100000kms or so, it should last for damn near ever.

Amarok's have never used DSG gearbox and I can't count the number of ZF 8 Speed gearbox issues I have heard about on the Amarok because I personally haven't heard of any, as @ToxicBunny has said they are pretty much bullet proof.
