Financial experts recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary – your salary before deductions – on vehicle payments.

shouldn't that be net salary?

WTF, half a million for a Polo, starting price? That can't be right. At this rate our current cars will have to outlive us. Or we'll just have to continue buying second hand cars forever.
It's still going to sell.

Starting price is R311k, half a mill is for the GTI trim.

Gone are the days when people could afford to buy a new car every three years while owning multiple properties and still have money left over for a yearly vacation with family

True, just can't wrap my head around the price these people want for a small car, and it's not only VW. I drove past a dealer yesterday selling a bunch of Kwids at R190k each, wtf pays almost R200k for a bloody kwid, it's crazy.
People think in terms of installments these days (and take balloon payments) and that Kwid is heavily marketed also.

I would love to be able to buy a decent brand new car one day, but can't see that happening.

Not so sure about those figures, if you're taking home around R35k, then you're spending a quarter of that on instalments alone, never mind insurance, fuel, maintenance etc. Suggesting that it's possible to buy a car that costs almost 90% of your annual gross salary seems a bit irresponsible.
