It seems we have low water pressure in Strand. The last time they did the piping upgrade, channelling low water pressure we had no running water in my area. Happily, I can live with it.

If the low water pressure persists, please repost your comment in this thread: https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/935179-Extreme-pressure-reduction-water-shedding

You may also want to read some of the discussion about how I/we dealt with it, in a large apartment complex.

The maths has been done a million times here... however, they have already said that informal settlements wont get cut off and neither will the CBD so that means its not going to be 4m people collecting.

Also, plenty of people are stock piling water so wont bother collecting at the stations, between that and borehole\wellpoint and river water most wont go every day. I know I wont.

Some sites will be huge. Iirc something like a thousand taps.

As a matter of interest I have always used bottled water to drink as I don't trust my tap water. In the past its cost me R1 a litre or R5 to refill my 5l bottles. I walked past the same water shop and it's now R12(!) for a 5l refill. Crazy profiteering.

And you know for sure where the bottled water comes from? You refill your bottles, so the water is almost 100% certain tap water pushed though some or other filtration process. You might as well get your own filtration system at home.

Some people will continue to be paranoid about water. I can only offer this movie clip from Dr Strangelove as response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr2bSL5VQgM

I'd imagine no one. I don't have a well point. :whistling:

I wonder how they'd actually do inspections - we're not home during working hours - my doorbell sends a photo to my phone - and if I don't recognize the person - I don't answer.
what is the name of thay door bell?

On average it should only be one person collecting for a family of 4 so that takes us down to 1 million.

Agree that most people also won't go daily. Most people with get very thrifty when they realise the hassle of collecting water so most people are likely to only go every second day. That takes us down to 2500 collections per water point per day.

Assuming 10 hours of peak operations and a conservative rate of 4 fills per tap per hour - you only need 60-70 taps per fill site.

At least one thing is for sure after all of this. The general skill level around excel will be much improved ......

Oh I'm quite sure it's tap water thats just filtered or gone through RO and I'm fine with that. My tap water is either cloudy, murky or clear so I just prefer to stick to the bottled stuff which is atleast clear all the time.

I've been looking into home filtration but I'm planning to move once I can get my house rented out.

Windows calculator is good enough for most arithmetic. It also helps to have basic levels of numeracy, and common sense. Off topic: Is that still taught in schools?

For the record, most of the dams in the Western Cape were built when engineers still used slide-rules (pre 1970s...)

Even advanced studies can be done with a few well chosen estimates: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_problem

An example is Enrico Fermi's estimate of the strength of the atomic bomb that detonated at the Trinity test, based on the distance traveled by pieces of paper he dropped from his hand during the blast. Fermi's estimate of 10 kilotons of TNT was remarkably close to the now-accepted value of around 20 kilotons.
