New water restriction tariffs hit Cape Town: what you need to know

These restrictions were supposed to have been "deliberated" and given the approval stamp in the council meeting on the 26th. But to date, no communication anywhere that this actually happened? All these articles are based on the announcement that Mayco recommended this to council.

I don't expect it to not be passed after mayco recommended it, but would be nice to know if things passed without amendments etc...

Something tells me industry generates theses things called jobs, which are apparently good for something called the economy. And residents need a good economy otherwise really bad things could happen... And also if industry water prices went up by 1000% overnight I suspect the residents would be making lots of fires and breaking windows when they see the new price of goods...

Then again what do I know, raise industry water prices ten fold, save all the water!! CoCT is evil!!

Hi - Point taken. Although perhaps the sarcasm was a bit unnecessary.

There does not seem to be any effort to encourage business to save water through tariffs or restrictions though. I'm sure there is massive waste in the business world. But no, I must shower over a bucket and have dead flowers, yet they can have green lawns and flower beds at their pretty office buildings. Even worse, I must pay a car wash R50 to wash my car with the exact same water I'm not allowed to use at home with my own damn hosepipe. It's not fair.

one thing i hate about this ****ing DA led government is the way they milk us. i think we pay the most for electricity as well. the city that works for you at a ****ing price buster.

Was walking home the other day when I saw water pouring out from underneath someone's gate. I walk up to the house and listen. It sounds like someone left a garden tap open. Ring the doorbell. Ring it again. No one home :/

I walked past the next day and it had stopped but holy ****, what a waste.

That they are. I have a plunge pool (about 3m x 3m) and a quote I got was close to R3k :wtf: Will probably just bite the bullet and do it.

Buy a roll of bubble wrap and cut to size.

Not as good as a premade solar cover but prevents evaporation (which is what the city wants) and evaporative heat loss so you get a nice temp increase too.

Must be a bitch to keep down on the pool... what with the south easter howling away and all that...
They come in rolls of 1m wide x ??? metre long? Replace the ??? with your required length. Then you somehow have to stitch or tape the three or four rolls together to cover the 3-4 metres length of your pool.

It crossed my mind, but not bubble wrap. Some other type of material sold by the roll.

Lol you think anc eff etc will waiver the costs. Get a life

screw you buddy. you get the idea that they slanted to the money generation side. they are not without fault. if you think that you just being silly. sometimes you get the feeling all they worried about is the bottom line. that is never a good thing for a government.

Hmm you're prob right - bubble wrap is not ideal, just cheap.

What one would want is a material thats:

- Clear: so to let sunlight through
- Not flat: so heat does not escape easily - bubbles work for this
- Floats on water
- Heavy enough not to blow away
- Easy to cut as most pools are not perfect rectangles
- Tough enough to not tear form constantly taking it out and putting back
- Cheaper than a pre-made cover else whats the point?

5 out of 7 for bubble wrap but if it blows away or tears that does not help much.

Any suggestions?

This stuff perhaps...?

Go to Plastics for Africa, or any of the other major plastic outlets, look around for "Bubble Sheeting" its similar to Bubble wrap, but much thicker.
They normally sell it by the running meter, about 1.5m wide. Then simply join together with some decent waterproof duck tape.

It looks identical to this:

Its essentially exactly the same thing pool covers are made of.

Pool net should stop it from blowing away.
