No, the archive and TimesSelect stuff was definitely not free (unless you hacked it Antowan Stoute kabouter!). Problem is that I can no longer be bothered reading the NYT --- once I've seen the headline I know almost *exactly* the line that that their writer will take on the issue. As far as Maureen Dowd goes: I'd pay money to avoid having to read her dreck.
