hi guys,

apologies for all the typos-right arm broken so have to left-type..

anyway, im trying to fast track the learning process, i read the faq but have some more questions:

1. what is the meaning of line attenuation? mine is 57, i know that this is quite high, but what is high in adsl terms?

2. in my router stats it says that im connected at 640 down, 384 up. how come is this when i have a 512 line?

this looks like a great community, btw. learned a lot already.

Speaking under correction, but I think it only points to the transfer rates your line can handle. Your actual line speed is controlled at the exchange (green box on the side of the road), with DSLAM ports or something. Lol I hope I'm right and I helped...

From Wikipedia:

Attenuation is the reduction in amplitude and intensity of a signal with respect to distance traveled through a medium.

The longer the wire, the weaker the signal, in general terms as I understand it.

wow thanks for such fast repliues guys!!!

can i abuse u with some more questions :)

1. what is the difference between the bridging and router modes? im currently using bridging, are there any (dis)advantages to this?

2. i wanted to donload something using emule (ed2k p2p network) and it complained about not being able to use some ports. R these firewalled on my side (cos i have to use a stupid enterprise fw) or is this telkom being telkom? Can i use some proxys to bypass this?

3.anything else i should know to get the most of this connection?

thanks again!

1. Disadvamtage: In bridged mode you don't get the advantage of a router firewall. Advantage: You can use multiple adsl connections using multiple accounts, no-one can hack the router to steal your account details and you have a direct connection to the internet so there is no need to set up port forwarding for some connections.

2. If you're in bridged mode you can rule out the router blocking it. Might be a firewall on your side or telkom might also have blocked it. Never really used emule so I'm not much help there.

3. It's 24 hours, so to get the most don't sleep :D watch your cap and make sure you don't use it too quickly to prevent getting cut off at the end of the month.
