In Ubuntu 9.10 and Kubuntu 9.10 how do I get that tray of icons at the bottom of my screen just like in Mac?? I'm running both on virtual machines. How can I get access to my files stored in windows. Using Vbox.

Search for "Dock" on ubuntuforums.

I know of Gnome Dock for Ubuntu and for KDE you can try Avant Window Navigator, KoolDock, KibaDock, fancytask plasmoid, Cairo-dock, Peachy Dock, etc

Avant window navigator is very similar in look to the Mac dock bar - Just go into the Ubuntu software center and type in: Avant. Then install it and it will be installed under Accessories. Here is my Avant dock bar:

How do you get a places folder on your desktop?

You have to install the screenlets app, there are a few great little screenlets like the ones I'm using on my desktop (Places, weather and the pidgin screenlet). In Ubuntu Software center just search for screenlets, install this application and you can access it from the Accessories menu.

Personally I use avant-window-navigator.

I don't know how far the others have progressed since I started using AWN. (About a year ago.)

Cairo dock is nice, but needs a face lift. The control panel is messy and not very pretty. Avant is clean and smooth and also has a simple user interface.
