Hi All,

Recently fed up with Win 7-64 on a nnew PC, having driver issue's made me look at what else is out there. My previous exp with Vista on an old PC was ok i guess but I dont have the money to buy that OS and 7 is all i have. I have spent much time reading on the net about Linux the distro's and what is available. As I am not a techie ( well not yet anyway) most things have pointed me in the direction of Ubuntu. If I understand it right, I kinda like install it and then the drivers of all my hard ware that I have and it should work just fine. If that's the case where can I buy it in SA. In my area there is no DSL only HSDPA - Vodacom so downloading such a huge file is not an option for me either. I live way north of Pretoria. Any advice greatly appreciated, Thanks All.:)

You don't have to buy it. PM your details and we can mail you a copy of the latest version. You can try before you go through with the install, too. Then you can see what hardware will and won't work. Otherwise if you come through to Pretoria East, you can pick it up from me.

Post your hardware specs, and we can better give you an idea of what to expect.

Maybe he doesn't want to have to deal with the endless driver hassles that exist on Windows?

Some people are happy to have the Linux kernel pick up their hardware and make it work without them having to fiddle the whole time! It helps us get more work done, sooner.

:D :D :D :D :D

Is it this motherboard:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products...oard&ProductID=2954&ProductName=GA-EG41MF-S2H
?

The reason I ask is because I wanted to check it the audio would be easily detected. If so, it is; it's the Realtek ACL888 which works, according to several threads on http://ubuntuforums.org

An ATI proprietary driver exists for the 5700 series, so I'm guessing that will work. It can be installed by reading the community documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

The instructions are (I think) fairly straight forward; tells you exactly what to do.

Not sure what other hardware you have, but since you have an Intel chipset on your motherboard, and the chipset itself is quite old, I doubt you'll have any issues with any of the onboard hardware.

Should be a pretty trouble-free install.

I'm also using a Gigabyte board with G41 chipset, you shouldn't have any issues regarding hardware.

you can also order ubuntu from fosscd for approximately R30. You dont buy the distro from them(its free), you pay them for the trouble of burning and shipping it..

Seems as if you are into gaming, then it would not be advisable to get linux, if you are a gamer.

HI Guy's.

A BIG thank you to sn3RD for sending me Ubuntu, it installed without any prob's at all and is running like a dream. All installed hardware seems to be working without a single glitch, I am not a gamer at all but run a bussiness in the metaverse called Secondlife and have done since mid 2006. It uses a viewer that connects directly to their servers, so I seldom browse. I do upload and stream mp3 files in world. They have a Linux viewer which is cool. I do however have one small prob, I been reading all over the net and dont know what to look for exactly.

I have a USB modem one Vodafone E220 and one Advinne HSDPA. The software and firmware is located on the USB dongle. Ubuntu identifies the modem as a Mass Storage Device and details all the files on them, but I have no clue how to get the device loaded as a modem. I know the Advinne AMC modem runs on Linux not sure about the E220 tho.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

.

The E220 works fine in linux. If memory serves me correct you can do the setup for it via Network Manager. Alternatively you can use the Betavine Vodafone Mobile Connect Client for it.

If you still have problems look at this, http://www.techrecipes.net/linux/huawei-e220-on-ubuntu-9-10-karmic-koala.html

That pc spec will run Ubuntu like a champ!! Enjoy!

*If you need a Windows function, just fire up Sun (or is it now Oracle) Virtualbox.....your pc spec can run a few virtual boxes. :)
