When you walk into MTN and ask for a hard cap on your postpaid account you get a big F u. The reason for that being they physically do not have the infrastructure in place to do it currently

I hear what you are saying but I personally say that this is a BS excuse from the service providers. Firstly, do the number of prepaid services not outnumber the postpaid service and if so why can they not implement the same kind of realtime monitoring on postpaid as on prepaid, should not be such a big thing to do.

Secondly, if Cell C, who is one of the smallest operators, can do so while roaming on other networks and the like then surely it cannot be that difficult for these other providers who has been around for decades already.

How they operate their business is up to them, all I'm saying is that they should not come with this attitude that they honestly care and that they try and prevent such things from happening while they do absolutely nothing about it due to 'the infrastructure that cannot accommodate it'. Its on that point where I call BS. Rather they just be honest and say outright we will not do anything about this as we are making a killing from it and if you do not want to contribute then take control of your data usage - as this is essentially what they are saying/doing.

CellC had a complete revamp few years ago bringing in Huawei which enabled them quicker to market solutions etc etc.

The big two have ZERO incentive to get rid of OOB, none, zilch, f0kol

Vodacom thank you for your support !

Just an arb vent.

I am now a member of the OOB victim club.

I have a call limit of R100 on my sons phone, been working quite well the last couple of years on his contract. We recently upgraded, he got an S5, and on Saturday night his phone downloaded a crap load of app updates and I am sure he probably surfed some too, ate up his data bundle and then chowed another R1200 worth of data.

What I didnt realise, is that the cost of the data (and or voice) is only calculated after the session ends, so its possible to bypass your call limit on your contract with ease - very very frustrating.

Anyway - I guess this is very expensive school fees.

Rant over!

Smartphones on contract = BAD (Unless you disable the data network, and connect wireless to a MI-FI device or be on prepaid, peace of mind)

OOB shark will definitely come out and haunt you in your sleep one dday

I always say to people it is nice getting a smartphone on contract due to no upfront fee for the device but wait there is a catch network providers have done their homework if there is no call limit on the line you will definitely go over your monthly budget allowance.

Contracts can be good if you willing to chop the contract card up and pay the monthly fee. That is the only way you will score.

In some instances I know of people spending R4 - 8 grand a month on their phone, just on calls! I explicitly told them get a top up contract, now they are struggling to pay that bill! The device has been paid for over, and over.

My contract is a top-up one.
For the last 2 years, when the data runs out, Whatsapp and all others stop working, Then I know its time to buy more data. Works beautifully.

You have peace of mind not to receive any bill shocker.

OP I would recommend you escalate this with the rep. He/she might be able to assist and credit the account and charge you a bundle rate if u lucky.

Hi All. I would appreciate some advice. I am a Vodacom customer. I have an iPhone 5 and I usually buy an additional 3GB data bundle which is usually more than enough for 2 months, considering that it only expires at the end of the following month. I check my balance every week to make sure that I do not go into OOB rates. Last night I discovered that my phone has been mysteriously using about 2 Gigs of data per day adding close to R8000 onto my account!! I suspect my iOS Mail app has been in a loop for the last few days, because according to the itemised bill the data usage went up from the day that Mail gave me errors that it could not connect to the Gmail server. The usage also shows about 12 Gigs of data bing used by the Mail app since end last year which is unlikely with normal usage (mostly reading only a few emails per week, without attachments).

I will appreciate any advice regarding this. I switched my phone off when I discovered this data usage and I am planning to go to Vodaworld to try and sort it out. Perhaps the iStore should look at the phone and determine what the issue is. I don't mind paying for data that I used intentionally. In this case my phone has been using data without me initiating those data requests, possibly due to this Mail error.

I see Zululami has received a gesture of goodwill from Vodacom with OOB charges. Zululami, could you please share how you went along raising your issue to Vodacom. Which Department should I contact regarding this?

Any advice will be appreciated. I really cannot afford to pay this OOB bill. Thanks

I do not understand why the service providers cannot just solve these OOB problems once and for all.

Not sure how their billing works but I call BS on the fact that the billing is done after the session ends. Why can it work on prepaid where you are cutoff even before you get to your last cent but on contract it just keeps on running for ever?

It is not in their interest.
I am at 8ta and as soon as my gigs are gone it stops working and gives me the option to oob. Why does vodacom refuse to do the same?

Pity TelkomMobile is not sustainable, even according to their own CEO :(

Yes, Vodacom and MTN don't have much incentive to kill the OOBshark, it makes them lots of Rs.
Imagine they do enable the feature to not allow OOB shark - they would possibly loose in the region of R10-100 million+ per month :p

Bullocks it is sustainable if they play their cards right! If they can the Go Big 120 I am off to find a new network

Anyone know if I can get the warning sms's sent to a different number?
