That has nothing to do with where WP Rugby is played or in what stadium. SARU wants to take the game to the people....

How is Newlands better for taking the game to the people than Cape Town Stadium? My point was that Newlands got the worst of the six test matches in SA this year. SARU won't waste a top draw test on the venue.

WP Rugby is basically bankrupt. How on earth are they going to maintain that stadium ?

I highly doubt that the city would transfer ownership to the WPRU. Thus they will only pay rent, the same way that Ajax does.

Newlands Stadium does not conform to international stadium safety regulations for major events. Even with money to spend they won't achieve conformity. One of the safety regulations state that the Stadium must be adjacent to a large open space for fast and complete evac ... Newlands can never achieve this. WPRU has to comply at a specific date (not sure when but it is a couple of years away). WPRU knows they won't make it and if they don't they will not be allowed to stage major events. They must talk to the City especially considering that the City is tasked to enforce the safety regulations.

Fact is that Newlands is a dangerous venue as is. If something serious bad is going to happen there that requires fast evacuation all hell is going to break lose. And then WPRU is going to face litigation until they go under.

If there is a serious threat, like a bomb threat, where will all the people evac to where they are guaranteed to be protected? People running into streets inbetween houses is not a good thing. Crowd control is impossible. A large open well controlled perimeter is needed.

So will Newlands then become Oldlands?

Knock it down, and something else. Some pepole are nostalgic about Newlands, but older stadiums with more history have been left behind before. It's time to move forward.

The SARB would make a fortune selling the land to developers. I estimate R4bn to R5bn

The new stadium has seats that are too far away from the action - its difficult enough watching guys kicking around a round ball, let alone watching guys making contact in the tight ruck situation. Newlands and Kings park are both ideal rugby watching grounds due to their steep terraces.

CT Stadium has some of the best sightlines of any stadium in the world. Not many modern stadiums will get you closer to the action. Newlands is a great historic venue but CT stadium is a great modern venue. WP could finance the move to CTS just by selling the land Newlands is on to developers.

Speaking out of complete ignorance.

Knock down the Newlands stadium and build a massive car park; it will be full half the time.
