Because accounting is boring as fsck?

That is true. One of my Uni modules at the moment is Financial Accounting and it is probably the most boring, most-difficult-to-get-started subjects I have ever done.

You can do a lot better than 50k if you make the right decisions in IT. Do the hard stuff! :)

For sure but when I read about people saying "you'll be earning 50k in no time" with absolutely certainty I tend to go

Hard stuff - would you care to elaborate please :)

Senior SAS programmers can make anything from 50-75k+ a month in the financial and pharmaceutical sectors, if you work at the right places.

Yup. Seems I chose the wrong sector. Masters degree down the drain :p

How do CA's are such a disproportional amount to most other sectors ?

Masters in what?

Something very obscure that has no link to money or tech

Psychology with an even more obscure specialization into health promotion. At the moment I'm working on Monitoring and Evaluation projects, doing a lot of their qualitative and quantitative design and analysis. Making about 3/4 of what OP was thinking was fine

At least my job can be interesting. Can't even think numbers in accounting form can be interesting :\. Trade-offs

Edit: Maybe this will make OP feel less bad about R20k a month. You would still clear more than I earn :p

I wouldn't say its disproportional. 3 year degree + honors + 3 years of articles earning 14k pm starting and ending at about 25k. After that 40-50k per month.

Think about what salaries other jobs command with 3 - 5 years work experience.

I think the main thing with CA is that it tells you something about the persons character - they are hard workers, dedicated to what they are doing and long term focused. Vs someone who does a 3 year degree - which doesn't tell you much other than that they have money for varsity and that they can do some work.

You can always do the CA conversion course which UCT offers. Its a two year programme excluding articles.

What is the "hard stuff"? Starting honours next year and don't want to be on the wrong track.
