Why do we need to be saddled with the rediculously bad accents that some of the news reporters use? Needless to say this seems to be an SABC "feature".

You don't need to be "saddled" with it, vote with your remote.

I often wonder about the whole accent thing. For instance few people complain that the French accent for instance is a bad one. Accents are just that. People who do not have the language they are speaking as their 1st language.

I think anyone who complains about an accent should provide an mp3 recording of how they speak English.

What?

I think for a certain level of prefessionalism, the SABC should hire journalists capable of at least correct pronunciation. It is a criteria for their news anchors, so WTF can't they do the same for the the journalists? E-Tv do it.

Let me ask you one thing Jonty. What is the demographic breakdown of SABC3 news?

Well, just so we're clear while you're high on the hog on that big ol' white horse o' yours, maybe we can talk about a criterion (criteria is the plural) where going off pop about lack of professionalism is that you don't get the basics ridiculously wrong ...but that's just me, I'm somewhat excitable that way! :D

Whatever typo man. Maybe you can get a job at News 24 or www.theregister.co.uk  I don't spell for a living.

When the SABC starts employing reporters and the like who report/comment in their own language or at least have an excellent grasp of the language they are working in and they are reporting to people who share the same language...only then will I start paying TV license fees. Imagine the outry if some reporter whose first language was English and had but a basic grasp of say Zulu was employed as a news reporter for the Zulu news bulletin? If I was a Zulu speaking viewer I would be p1ssed off at having to strain to understand.

Hearing impaired?

EDIT - I'm sure the 3 SABC networks pool many of their reporters hence the problem with the pronunciation.

SABC 1 and 2 feature news broadcasts in various ethnic languages. ALL NEWS BROADCASTS ON SABC 3 ARE IN ENGLISH (SABC policy). The journos in the Zulu broadcasts speak perfect Zulu with no mispronunciation problems. Why can't I as an English speaking person enjoy the same privilege? So far only FreshyZN seems to get this.

I definately get it. I refuse to watch SABC news as I cant understand most of the broadcast. If I must have a local news broadcast I watch E-News but Sky or BBC news is a breath of fresh air: eloquent reporters who mostly have an outstanding grasp of the english language.

heh, go jonty; fabulous senses of humour and self-importance you've got going there  ..seriously tho': if you're going to go off about someone else getting it glaringy wrong, it's a good idea to get your end right, you come off as rather less of a jackass that way.

That said, believe me, I AM with you on TV reporters (and radio, and paper media, for that matter) murdering the language: I cringe at the mispronunciations and butchered words that they inflict on us. Oh, and I read El Reg from time to time; as I've lamented with a pal o' mine who sends me links from something that he's read/is lusting after, their correspondents can be JUST as bad!

Also....whats even more annoying is that the reporters dont seem to spend any time researching. Surely they should proof read thier script and check the pronunciation of any unfamiliar terms/words?

I remember not so long ago when i used to listen to the radio that the reporter on 5fm news (black female) was talking about the Aegean Sea and she pronounced it Eee-gin Sea. Pure neglect of the language I tell you!
