hi, came across a prob while extracting my downloaded game using grabit. turns out the parts are not recognised as rar archives so when i try to extract them it says that the parts are broken. any help on how to fix? tried quikpar, says no repair needed

ok so i managed to extract a;; parts but now it shows that it is a 5xxmb BIN file. it was suppose to be an installation file. where did i go wrong and how can this be fixed. i hope this download wasnt a 500+mb waste of international data :(

.BIN is the same as .ISO usually [cd image] and usually is accompanied by a small .CUE [or a few other extensons] file . So try mount it on a virtual image tool like daemon.

Is there a limit to how many connections you can have in Alt.binz? Mine's configured to use 6 (4 IS and 2 SAIX) but generally only 5 actually connect.

I think IS allows 3 connections. Not sure though.

My guess is you're connecting to IS with 5 threads. Have you set up some sort of traffic splitting to allow you to connect to both servers? Remember you need to be on the network in order to connect to that network's news server!

EDIT: Basically you can't connect to the SAIX news server on an IS account.

Seeing as some people are connecting to SAIX on the Axxess accounts I guess SAIX have not got all the Axxess IPs blocked yet?

Nah, I've checked and double checked - it's definitely connecting to both. Either a 4/1 or 3/2 IS/SAIX split. I was just curious if AltBinz was the culprit for not using 6 threads.

Someone mentioned that on Axxess IS local that both news.is.co.za and news.saix.net point to the same IP, in this case the IS news server. That would also explain why you only get 5 connections. Do a tracert to confirm, but I suspect that is why you connect to "both".

Possibly, will check. Although in that case my SAIX based accounts shouldn't connect but do (Tried my brothers MWeb account - just popped in his username/password, fired up AltBinz and the SAIX connections are still fine although the IS ones are not).

*Shrug* IS News Server only gives me grief at the end of the month and I have SAIX based accounts for then anyway.

Do you only download cached? I had tried IS on some items, probably uncached, was terrible.

Interesting. What are you using to split traffic etc.
I was thinking about using all my concurrent connections and a bunch of virtual boxes to get 32 connections but I decided against it because it would be in bad taste. However I wouldn't feel bad connecting to IS and SAIX at the same time.

I assume you use the DNS settings that are automatically assigned to you? In that case, Axxess' DNS shows that news.saix.net is pointing to the IS news server. When using MWeb's DNS, news.saix.net will point correctly to the SAIX news server.

Well, that's my understanding from reading others' comments, I don't use Axxess so I can't test it.

Do a tracert on both Axxess and MWeb to both IS and SAIX servers and see what it shows.

news.saix.net down?
I'm downloading a cached file so I should be able to download it during the day right?

No, during the day the server itself is shaped/limited. You won't get above 4KBps during the day, even then it will only be for a second or so every five-ten minutes.

You can actually download cached content at full speed during the day.
Most likely the file he's trying to download isn't cached anymore.

From SAIX? Really? I had no idea. Just shows that I don't download much cached content.

Impossible. It was just put on the server like 5 hours at the time of my previous post. The cached files never gave me problem until now. Maybe it's because of the broken SAT3 cable?

It's possible it didn't mirror the entire giganews server because of the fault.

What time and server are you referring to? If you mean the age of the NZB (i.e. the time it was uploaded to Usenet), then it being on the server for 5 hours does not mean that it is cached. If it downloaded slowly, it was not cached.

It's possible it didn't mirror the entire giganews server because of the fault.

It never did mirror Giganews. It is a misconception that Giganews gets mirrored, it came from an ISP stating on their website that "SAIX now mirrors Giganews...". That is not true, SAIX/IS only gets their feed from Giganews.
