Hi People.

I think Jawug is ready to move forward, and we need a little input from the Community.
We went to set up a new Highsite, but we'd like to start with the site that will connect the most users initially.

The choices are:
a) Dawnview hill.
This highsite was one of MegaWan's first towers. It covers most of Edenvale, Kensington and Bedfordview. If you can see a flat hill, with about 6 antenna masts on it, that is Dawnview hill (sometimes known as Fishers hill)
It will link directly into the existing JaWug Kensington network.

b) Northcliff hill.
This highsite will be positioned on the block of flats (Worlds View) which is on the side of Dawnview Hill. It covers large parts Randburg, Sandton, and everything in between. If you can see the block of flats below the water tower, you probably have a good chance of connecting.
This will be a seperate network until we can get it linked to another part of JaWug.

So... Everyone go outside and stand on your roof. If you can see any of the above sites, let us know.

The equipment to link to a JaWug site is pretty cheap...
http://www.jawug.za.net/JawugKit is a complete kit that will have you connected in a few hours.

Remember, its community run. No monthly fees, you only pay for your own hardware.

Go visit http://www.jawug.za.net/ for more information.

Okay, So far, here's the count (including off forum votes):
Northcliff: 10
Dawnview: 5

Hey Daffy,

I vote for Northcliff. Looking at nodedb there appears to be many people in the randburg area just waiting for a node to connect to. I'm one of those people.

Btw - what equipment / Antennae will you use for the highsite?

I've been keen on getting a node running for a long time, but have always been daunted by the cost and the construction and of course wondering if my location is close to another node ?

Is blairgowrie covered ? - I'm near the Timber City on Jan Smuts, pretty much on top of the hill. I see there's two active nodes in blairgowrie, so I guess I could connect to Jawug ? - just need to find R2000 from somewhere ! :D

Now we talking
Northcliff & Dawnview.
Would it be possible to connect dawnview and northcliff and thus get northcliff on jawug?

I vote for northcliff. It will cover a large area, and I will be able to pick it up from Rosebank/Parktown North.

Will have to buy back the antenna's I sold. Damn

Robone. Whereabouts in Parktown/Rosebank are you? I already have a node running in the Rosebank CBD, and one in Greenside. Put yourself on the nodedb dude!

Uniterm Direct sells it all. They actually make up the Jawug Kit for us.
www.dbg.co.za is where you can get their contact details.

TheRodent, I am off Jan Smuts avenue on the border with Rosebank, and a clear line of site to NorthCliff corner. I think I will join Jawug, for the fun of it.

My system at the moment is a adsl Usb modem linked to my one computer I use as a server. I want to get the linksysWAP54G as the AP. I am using 602lansuite as the lan manager. Anyone have any ideas, if I make my spare bandwidth available to the general public and fellow Jawug members, is there someway I can limit their bandwidth use with the system I have at the moment. Don't want to change anything too much as its all working well. Windows 2000 operating system.

I must share my spare bandwidth as it kills me to know that I have at the moment 1.5 gig that I can't use before the end of tomorrow.

Robone, can you see the Internet Solutions buildings? Please, register yourself on the nodeDb so we can look at connectivity options.

Get a LinksysWRT54G, rather than the WAP54G. They're more feature rich and the same price.

I'm too lazy to do set things up. Can the Uniterm Direct okes do it for me (at a fee off course)?

This sounds really great and I'm keen to join.

TheRodent..Where is the IS building. In Rosebank or Northcliff corner. I will have a look this weekend. I will also register this weekend. Have my co-ordinates already from the sentech site.
I also bought LinksysWRT54G, only because they never had the WAP, but as you say, maybe its a good thing.

Tell me what software do I have to run on this side? Other than what I have and what comes with the AP

IS Building is corner of Jan Smuts and Keyes Avenue, on a bit of a down slope going southwards towards Bolton, so you may not have LOS...

TheRodent...Daffy...just a short question. I have my wrt54G set up now, but as a Hub/WAP. To use it as part of Jawug, does it have to be set up as a router? If so, I will have to re-think my setup at home.
