Effective the 1st of Jan 2018, NGN has been sold due to pressure from bigger players in the market. It looks like the purchaser pulled the plug on the brand.

As to what happened to NGN, I am unfortunately bound by non-disclosure. All I can say, is with Astraweb now being owned by HighWinds, Usenet is pretty much becoming one big fat monopoly. Hybrid providers (like NGN was), is seen as the sworn enemy.

As to the rest of the comments that's been made and posted... You're welcome to form your own opinions I suppose. I am not going to be drawn into a public debate as to what did and did not happen. The simple fact is, I can not talk about it.

In this sales agreement that you signed, I assume you insisted that they include a clause stating that the buyer would not drop paid-up customers? Or did you not care about paid-up customers?

Next thing he'll do is change nicknames or probably already have another alias registered.

Anybody know if there's another local news provider? An alternative to this awesome service?

Also keen to know. Have asked a few times.
Or is it a 'dime a dozen' scenario?

Why do you want a local provider?

NGN wasn't exactly local, the site wasn't hosted in SA and the backbone wasn't here either, the only thing was the owner and that they charged in Rands.

Payment method... It allowed for payfast, which is how I pay for most SA stuff.

I don't have a credit card, so can't purchase from anywhere else, for local credit card purchases I use VCPAY, and they don't allow international transactions, (even if you 'upgrade' your account)

But, regardless, I'm not that keen anyway, I still use the news.is server because I'm with cool ideas, very low failure rate.

The only reason I wanted a back up Usenet account was when I wanted to get older content. But I will deal with that when it comes.

Not banking with FNB, not as easy to load on Pay Pal account.

I've tried.

Used to use Entropay (used 12payonline to load the credit card, until they shut down completely) to create virtual credit cards, always worked perfectly.

I have my Capitec card on PayPal, it was easy to add, I used it just yesterday.

I should have clarified it better: not concerned with local vs international nor about payment method.

Just need a good backup block provider for those items which I cannot obtain through a local ISP's nntp server, mostly due to their retention periods generally being somewhat shorter (ca 200 days, sometimes little longer)

So far I like Free-usenet and Newsdemon from a block perspective - haven't investigated much beyond that as it seems that ultimately most of them are Highwinds downstream providers regardless, so its really down to what's the 'best deal of the day' it seems.
