Vereeniging - Transvaal Judge-President Bernard Ngoepe says poverty and unemployment do not justify the murder of his granddaughter and the rape of her nanny."It is difficult to justify some of the crimes we see in this country," he said.
He said the concept of a life sentence was misleading to the public as prisoners were eligible for parole after spending 25 years in prison, depending on their behaviour.
Crime statistics 'crazy'
He called on the government to institute democratic processes to determine the reinstatement of the death penalty.
Judge Hattingh said that, in his opinion, the crime statistics released this week were "crazy" because nothing had changed.
The court would advise the department of correctional services not to release the Molefe and Ndlovu before they were 60 years old.

I don't think police will have enough motivation to solve a nobody's maid's rape and murder case, but hey, If it happens to a "VIP", then pressures from all areas will somehow prioritized the case......Too sad, maybe that little girls life is worth a whold lot more than other ordinary crime victims, VIVA ANC!

Bring the death penalty back!
Use it sparingly for cases where there is 100% proof that the perpetrator is guilty (DNA + lots of other evidence).

In cases like this, i am all for the death penalty.

In this specific case these guys will sit until they are 60 years or older.
As they are now 21 and 22 years of age they have basically messed their lives up.
Other than the 4 walls of jail they will not be able to lead a normal life.

Perhaps they should be given the option in law to get the Death Sentence, by a lethal injection if they chose?
It may be better for them and also cheaper for the tax payer who now has to support them for 40 years or more.
Currently it cost more than R100 a day to keep one inmate. That was the last figure I heard. It is likely R200 a day for all we know?

As far as I am concerned there is no justification for this type of behaviour. People are responsible for their own actions - blame lies entirely on the people who commit such acts. Blaming apartheid is as usefull as blaming Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto for cop killings in the US.

But hey, its ok because of apartheid right? I mean, its not like these people are responsible for their own actions or government responsible to deal with it? We can all wash our hands clean of responsiblity because, you know, apartheid.

Why are the black people in the townships suffering even more than we are then? Why do they treat their own kind just as badly or worse?
Why did the different tribes go around hunting and killing each other for sport before the white man colonised this country?

If a man kills my daughter today does that give me any right to go and kill his daughter tommorrow? What sort of screwed up logic is that?

Why bother even having things like democratic elections, truth and reconciliation commissions, BEE, etc. if they all mean nothing at the end of the day?

There are social problems caused by the past. Nobody can deny this.

However, I am referring to these specific convicted murderers and rapists that find it in themselves to rape the maid and then strangle the little girl to death.
Doesn't matter what your past is, in common law adhered to by just about every nation across the globe and even in the church, this is not on.

One has to grapple with the thoughts of how the girl must have choked as she succumbed to her attackers violence. It was not an easy or painless death.

I cannot agree that in this specific instance that our past was responsible for these acts of violence.
For all we know they were drunk or on drugs and they went a little too far?
They will have many years to think about what they did on that fateful day.

I have no sympathy for them.
Their acts were barbaric and justice has been served on them.

The fact that I may be white has no relevance to the topic.

My children know what is right from wrong.
I tell them about our past and they learn about it at school.

As father of two I have an idea of how the judge felt upon hearing the news - my condolences go out to him and his family.
