IT’S nice to be Gauteng finance MEC Paul Mashatile because you can have a dinner worth R96000, at a restaurant where bottled water costs R120, and implicitly tell taxpayers to go to hell when they ask you questions about your careless spending of their money.
But it’s even better to have a spin doctor of the calibre of Percy Mthimkhulu, who has to try to justify why the dinner had to be so expensive, and how it was possible to have that dinner for 200 people in a restaurant that can seat only 75 people. (Something doesn’t add up here, Percy, or am I stupid like the rest of the “whingeing” masses?)
It’s nice to be Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma because you can sing your Mshini Wami to uproarious approval and continue to insult gay people, telling them and the nation that when you were growing up homosexuals could not stand in front of you, meaning, one supposes, that they would be harmed or assaulted.
But it’s even better to know that because of your standing in the community, and also because of your foul-mouthed supporters who insult your detractors at the slightest provocation, you can turn around a few days later and say you are sorry; and further point out that “our Constitution clearly states that nobody should be discriminated against on many grounds including sexual orientation, and I uphold and abide by the Constitution of our land”. (Very profound, indeed.)
