Nigerians fingered in R42m Postbank heist

Sorry but I just couldn't stop myself from laughing @ the thread title :p

Holy crap. Just read the entire article. This was very well planned and performed. This should be a movie

Still reeks of an inside job.

How the fark did they get software to clone a POS terminal ?

Its SAPO customised software and only SAPO staff have access to even configure such a cloned machine.

Great! so now a bunch of murder cases and violent crime goes unsolved while the govt throws all their resources at this.

When working with fraud in the bank before, I'd come across similar cases. But not such a huge amount. A few hundred thousand maybe. And also not with the cloned terminal. That's a step up!

Before it was just altered cheques into fraudulent/genuine accounts with an inside person that opened them. And then the mules go and withdraw the cash.

These guys have stepped up their game.

:wtf: People are always unhappy and complaining. Don't think that the police in Soweto or Brits have the resources to catch those who robbed Postbank, but they do have the resources to arrest those that are wanted for violent crimes.

Quite interesting.

This means that they must have had insider info regarding the computer setups etc...

PLUS - how did they connect to the Postnet network?

I'm so glad I don't work for financial institutions :D

Well - the lesson is that a security mechanism is only as weak as its weakest user. This hasn't really been a compromise of the IT system, it was an compromise a specific employees. The only thing that the system can do is to have restrictions in place on what an employee can do, and early warning systems.

But seriously - in the days before computers this might just as well have been an employee whose physical key was copied.

And I think the media should not label these crimes as "IT" crimes. These syndicates target's are people, not technology. Phishing is not an IT problem, it is a people problem. And the scary thing is - all this is labeled as "IT"problems which means the average non-tech-savvy person will not take responsibility for their own and other's security. If a person walks up to on the street claiming to be from the bank and ask you to give your details you would tell them to go away. But if the person would send a mail then suddenly half the people will respond and include their kids details as well.

Inside job for sure ... and the mules all going to jail nigies are long gone
