My wife and I have owned this nikon D40 for about 4 years now. It's really a great camera but it's been giving shutter problems and Nikon service centre have said it could cost about R2000 to fix.

I've considered it but with electronic goods, I find it may start giving more problems. The actuations are about 8000.

So if you were in my shoes, what Make/Model would you get as an entry level camera from your experience - must be DSLR. I would consider a mid-range as she does a lot of photography and kids parties.

Shutter problems at only 8000 actuations? I'd be considering switching brands but if you've got a nice collection of lenses look no further than the D7000.

Why not look at getting another Nikon. I saw someone had a D60 (old model I know) for R4500, which included most of the basic kit. If you've got extra lens' apart from the stock 18-35, it's probably worth your while to stay Nikon. If you can afford get a new model, like the D7000 mentioned above

If the D7000 is too expensive, then the D5100 has the same sensor at a much lower price - nice camera !

If you have some more than just the 18-55mm kit lens, then sticking to Nikon would be a prudent decision. The D3100 is around the market-level of the D40. If you're considering a mid-range body but don't want to spend too much, the D90 is a pretty good deal at the moment.

If, however, you're not invested in Nikon glass, and you don't want to spend too much, the Pentax K-r is pretty good value for money compared to its direct competition. See the dpreview comparison. Better screen, bigger viewfinder, higher (usable) ISO (than the Canon, at least), faster shutter speed, faster frame rate. Fewer video options though.
