owned about 3 to 4 wii's over the years, i dont recall having any problems with the launch model. the black limited edition ones were also without problems, i even had a red limited edition one for a while and also no issues so i think you should be good to go regardless of manufacture date.

they go really cheap at cash crusaders and the like - R500 or less with a game or two. try and get one with two (or more) remotes together with the nunchuks - those are still pricey to buy if you looking to buy them separately.

oh the first one used to have the inputs for the previous model gamecube controllers - think those went away with older models or the "slim" model so take note of that if it makes a difference to you.

best piece of advice game wise - get resident evil 4 :D very very enjoyable! i played and re-played it about 10 times! oh obviously not for smaller kids :p

I have both the Wii and WiiU. If you can get the WiiU at a decent price, maybe go for that, you can play all the wii games plus some awesome wiiu titles like Zelda BOTW. But as ryu said, the Wii is very cheap second hand. And get at least 2 remotes, makes party games and mario kart waaay more fun.

i seem to recall a software hack to enable homebrew and all that comes with it as well :D so could be worthwhile to look into that.
i remember adding some of those older roms and playing battletanks etc on the wii with the pro controller - so there's a lot you can do to get the most out of it.
