Nissan Leaf, South Africa's first electric car, goes on sale

As a daily runner to the office, just on running costs alone - this could be a cool little car.

IMHO this is quite cool, but the price is a bit of a bummer.

Clearly a second car, though, you will need something else for longer trips.

Price is really a drawback on this one.
The running costs and all seem rather nice - but factor in Motor Financing costs and insurance - then you're negating the savings on the running costs.
For that kind of money - I'd actually prefer a 2 door sports car as a second car  ;)

I agree. We have 2 cars and it would great to use 1 car for typical day-to-day stuff and the other for longer trips.

But the price is still too high. Also in the US, this car is selling for $35 0000

"Leaf’s sales price of R446 000 might seem costly." ... might seem?
its really :crying: that a small car, of whatever tech, costs >R400K, and we shouldnt think of it as a tad expensive.
alas... its the economy and times we live in.
its all fine and well saying yaa but the running costs are lower, so you can pay more for the car...
so, choosing this will be mostly a 'green' decision... doing it for the cleaner environment, as there's not a real saving in total cost of ownership?

jeez... just gotta LOL when i watch Netflix and they bring up the US car ads .... realy nice upmarket cars for less than $250pm :D

Still... gotta accept this is still really new... the prices of evo cars are bound to drop eventually

The cost only equals out after 6 years, second hand value will probably be crap and replacing those batteries out of warranty (if they are even covered) will amount to a lot of money.

They should rather bring those hydrogen cars over hear (like that one Honda built).

The price is ridiculous. Nissan factoring for the loss of service and maintenance costs they ordinarily derive from petrol/diesel variants. There are no savings at that price - what's the point, unless people are incentivised, very few will purchase this other than people with money seeking attention with this new 'cool' factor.

Bloody stupid idea IMHO.
All you're doing is moving the pollution from the exhaust to Mpumalanga. I know it's a ****hole but that's still not cool.

Until we have proper nuclear and renewable energy providing the bulk of our power, this is a band-aid on an arterial bleed.

Well done Nissan and a South Africa on destroying the initiative by charging R100k too much. Might as well not have bothered

Tesla have proven that even with a coal based energy source, electric will still create less pollution than petrol/diesel. Also electric car have a much less drag coefficient, needing far less energy.

I just think it's a pity that the headline wasn't "Joule, South Africa's first electric car, goes on sale" :/

Wtf. Do you know what drag coefficient is?
