NMBM fears that day zero has arrived

No water trucks available as Nelson Mandela Bay hit by outages

With Nelson Mandela Bay facing an array of water outages, it has now emerged that the supply of water trucks has dried up.

The DA said on Wednesday this was because the metro had not paid contractors, while the metro said it was “a contractual matter related to payments”.

DA caucus leader Retief Odendaal said the situation was unacceptable.

“Notwithstanding the various water outages across the metro currently, there are unfortunately no water trucks available to be deployed.

“This is as a result of the metro neglecting to pay contractors which have now withdrawn their fleet.

“I will liaise with the department of water and sanitation to see if they can assist our residents during this latest emergency.

What are the dam levels like after the recent heavy rains?

Editorial in the Herald

The city’s acting executive director of infrastructure and engineering, Joseph Tsatsire, wants the municipality to continue imposing the punitive tariff Part C to curb high water use and avoid a budget shortfall.

He argues that moving from Part C to Part B would create an R85m hole in the city’s budget each month — even though the council adopted its budget for the 2024/2025 financial year based on Part B tariffs.

Part C tariffs are meant to be imposed only when there is a water shortage emergency.

The city’s stance is unethical and just wrong.

Don't think that court case was applicable to us
Have you ever seen Gummy Bears, the old TV series? All I know is that these guys are a bunch of ogres. If you don't get that reference, then think of them as Orcs.

The problem with inept leadership is that it erodes the institutional memory of the various depts withing the metro. There are also direct consequences that come to the fore.

Time for an anecdote: work colleague's prepaid meter goes afritz with her taking video footage of it happening. Leccie comes out and says sorry, top it up and call us if it happens again. She escalates it, leccie comes back and says yeah, will take it out and send it off for investigation and he will bypass the meter so long.

He warns her that it has taken others up to two years before they receive their meters back, with others having their meters lost.

As he leaves he told them to enjoy their free Mandela electricity.

Point is, it's all going down the throne.
