No Chromebook plans for South Africa

How many people are sad that SA won't be getting this crap? Ps I'm not.

To be honest, the Google Chromebook has been a bit of a flop. They need to focus on bringing out more Android devices.

Not 100% sure SA is ready considering the cost of 3G data and the scarcity of public WiFi.

With few exceptions, this is pretty much a global problem, which is why Google is pitching the Chromebooks mainly at educational institutions and corporates, places that are usually blanketed in fast wifi. I still think the idea won't work - the future is real OSes with cloud-based profiles and storage - but be aware that Google right now isn't trying to pitch this as the new OS for the general public.

Significantly watering down something like Unix does not IMO make for a good OS.
Really don't understand what need they are trying to fill, why would someone for example in the varsity space touch something so handicapped I.e. tied only into Google services...

Oh and while you at it, can you please try to also explain the separation between Android and Chrome + why you believe there is a need for both?

I've gotta say, the Chromebook isn't particularly appealing to me, but my opinion
isn't unbiased, since I'm a Windows/Firefox whore. :(

Still, this is probably miles better than Vodacom's webbook.

I want one soooo bad! Will be cool to use @ home over wifi but, ja, I dread taking it out the office. Defeats the object of having a laptop for most people. (Not for me though, as I mostly stay home anyway :D)

Just buy a cheap laptop and load it yourself; mandatory health warning -- it's crap and prolonged use can lead to laptop rage... ;)

I loaded Lime on my Samsung laptop yesterday (well actually, I just booted from a USB stick) and it sucked. Mostly because the WIFI only worked when I was using it in "Guest Mode" which, I imagine, is not how Google intended it to be used. I liked the slickness of it but, for it to be useful, I'd really need to try it with my Google Account. So, I'm not (yet) saying ChromeOS sucks but my experience of Lime sure did. Maybe Vanilla is more stable and works better? Will maybe give that a shot some time.
