"Mnisi further said that the SAT3/WASC/SAFE cable has a maximum capacity of 120 Gbps and that it is estimated that only 2.5 Gbps is currently used for Internet access in South Africa."

Surely not? How much of that 120 Gbps does Telkom have access to? I am assuming a lot more than 2.5Gbps.... in which case, as always, Telkom: 1, South Africa: 0

Now, that's interesting.

The DoC said that they will be able to make an informed judgment about the international bandwidth requirements and capacity on current cable system by the end of 2008.

Isn't that leaving it a bit too late?

I am sure Telkom will come out guns blazing at comments that it uses only 2% of SAT3 capacity - hopefully they will give someone actual data about their usage, not fabricated data to justify their high prices.

I wish Telkom, DoC etc would stick to a number as whenever it suits them the Sat-3/Safe cable is either under utilised and extra cables unnecessary or over utilised and justifies cost.

As per one of my previous posts it was quoted that the converged network for the 2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany which was developed by T-Systems had capacity of 480Gbps (This was for broadcast, comms and other data access).

Are the people in charge so bloody stupid? Is it that hard to get figures from Germany as to their bandwidth requirements? Surely, if we're to host a world class event than it wouldn't be wrong to use the numbers from the 2006 World Cup as an orientation?

But I'm sure with something like "480Gbps" the people at the DoC are going "Eish! That kant be troo! Det is too hai a numba to be right! The silly Germans and their typos, yooyoo!"

I don't know about the demand, but the I know about the supply:
It's NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH.

We can always solve the problems by evenly distributing the broadcasting of the 2010 world cup over a period of the next century or so.

Another perfect example of gov not knowing or caring about what's promised or required.

Except the difference now is, the world will see for themselves how greedy and incompetent they are.

On a similar point, has any seen the South Africa ad on CNN?

They go on about South Africa having a good climate, being situated in a good time zone, and very shrewdly slip into the ad world class telecommunications

Are the people in charge so bloody stupid? - YES

Is it that hard to get figures from Germany as to their bandwidth requirements? - When you are that stupid (see first question) - YES

And probably going, "Jo, I can't even count that high."
