No fare, cry Uber taxi competitors

Shame, butt hurt taxi drivers...

Move with the times or go out of business. This level playing field nonsense just amuses me.

The taxi operators does have a point. If each Uber driver is seen as an SME, and thus individually responsible for VAT, then most of them will be exempt from having to charge VAT (turnover less than 1 M). This is a significant cost-saving that gives Uber an unfair advantage. How can someone else compete if they're legally obliged to charge 14% more?

Who cares? Stuff the government and their VAT...

So?

Uber is a disrupter.

The Taxi companies need to evolve to function in the market place that is developing or they must go out of business.

This also means that the uber driver cannot claim back input tax, as a vat-registered operator can. So it actually balances out...

Uber is basically just avoiding local regulations and taxes with loopholes and technicalities. This is not just a issue for the local market either, other countries in Europe are also facing the same issues.

The minibus taxi industry as a whole has been operating for decades while dodging income and business tax yet no one seems to be complaining about their operating model.
While I don't support tax evasion, the metered taxi industry are a bunch of whiny losers.

The taxis can go stuff themselves. They charge absurd amounts, have pretty lame service and I've seen a few of them that I can't imagine will make it through a roadworthy inspection. Stop crying about lost business and find a way to compete. Uber is just convenient and relatively cheap.

It is very hostile at the moment. My friend has a few Uber vehicles and they are constantly being vandalised, threats made etc.

If they only charged 14% more there would be no issue. They are more like 100% more and then in some dodgy car where things like seat belts don't work.

The is called the free market. if they can't compete with their outdated models, so what, then they fail. that's how it works in all other environments.

Taxis drivers are just upset that people are being driven around in proper cars and not their heaps of scrap.
The Mozzie cabs in Durban are such a disgrace, they are all banged up and half of the time the seat belts in them don't even work.

Also, it is great that the Uber knows where you pick you up. So many times you are late because the stupid taxi driver doesn't even know how to use the GPS stuck to his window and gets lost to pick you up.

After using Uber, I realised it was the first time that I used a Cab and didn't have to have an argument with the driver over the fare. With the others, there's always an argument, not to mention the stench inside the Cab..

The DA, and Brett Herron in particular, have lost so much respect from me over this, it isn't even funny.

Wouldn't be surprised if Brett received a Christmas gift from the Cape Town Taxi Council

Reason people love fast food, its uniform. Generally wherever you get fast food its the same. People don't like change

Who exactly is complaining here? The unregulated/tax dodging minibus taxi industry or the regulated R12/KM cab taxi industry? I have not used the minibus taxi services but I can tell you the R12/KM cabs (QuickCab, etc) are not just late, but the driver is borderline deliberate in taking a longer route to crank up the fare and the stench in some of them are atrocious. None of these issues are a problem with Uber at almost half the price per KM.

Yes pretty much this. With uberX I know the costs are very reasonable and it's all done automatically etc and there's no discussion at all over this with any driver ever so far. They are cheaper than regular taxis, there's no having to phone someone, try spell things out 10 times, phoning to ask where the guy is or if he got lost etc etc, seeing if you have cash or passing by an ATM, trying to negotiate with the driver and then the actual cars themselves. I pretty much know it's going to be a corolla and he's going to travel slightly under the speed limit and the seat belts, radio, aircon are all going to be working 100% and he's not going to get lost or waste time trying to find a place.
