Yeah, my bad - it's DNS after all. Very easy to fix. On windows XP:

1. start / control panel / network connections
2. right click / properties on Local Area Connection
3. go down to TCP/IP and select it.
4. Click Properties, click Advanced click DNS
5. Add these two OpenDNS addresses: 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222

All sorted and you'll never have to worry about Telkom's DNSs again.

Thanks.

I use bridge mode, so where the bolded bit is, I right clicked my active [dial-up ADSL] connection.

If DNS was working then you could resolve the IP address, but if DNS was working then we wouldn't have to use IP addresses ;) hmm chicken before the egg.

Better way to resolve IP addresses while SAIX dns is down

from cmd prompt do

nslookup - 208.67.222.222

then at the prompt type in the name you want resolved.

Or just change your DNS servers to OpenDNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Gateway timeouts when using OpenDNS server.

Netcache servers at SAIX are intercepting international traffic and doing their own DNS lookups for the webservers as SAIX DNS is stuffed at the moment, netcache lookups are stuffed as well.

For those not winning with OpenDNS or current SAIX DNS settings, set your primary dns server to 196.43.1.11 (Rosebank) or 196.25.1.11 (Cape Town)

Local access flies on this DNS server int. is not happening, got onto gmail though.

Ok, opendns still does not work for me. I think there is someone else afoot.

I am in Claremont, Cape Town using WebAfrica.

Is there any chance WebAfrica in CT have been affected by something else like a router or cable down?

Of those in this thread who can not use opendns, are you all using webafrica?

I think this explains clearly what is happening

Telkom reported it as a DNS issue but yes, I changed to OpenDNS and only a few sites work now. I still get DNS timeouts on most sites using OpenDNS.
Hmmm I'm wondering if the infamous Conficker virus that is supposed to strike today... has something to do with it? Servers not patched?

I'm on WAfrica = saix

SAIX Caching DNS problems:

All users utilising the SAIX Caching DNS service will experience internet browsing problems. The SAIX engineers are busy attending to the problem.

Changing my nameservers to OpenDNS (thanks to cyberarmy for the advice) works for all the websites that I am trying to access. I would be interested to have an example of a website that is still not accessible to someone using OpenDNS. I am on Telkom adsl.

Apparently telkom is having huge dns errors, so using openDNS should solve the problem...
