No International?

International seems to be working, but quite slow.

Tracert indicates average packet times to UK of 350ms.

Probably working at 50% capacity (SAFE?), and congestion makes it feel sluggish...

Update: There also seem to be intermittent local network problems, which may make things worse for CT users.

Yeah latency is still high, where I would normally get 203ms to certain servers I use daily it is now more in the region of 350 - 400 ms , Afrihost via IS , in CPT.

Afrihost has never stated that their bandwidth was seacom based. For the record, Afrihost do not run or control their own ADSL network. They resell IS bandwidth. Any issues you might have with an Afrihost ADSL account is ultimately Internet Solution's problem.
Thank you for the clarification.
I think I was confusing Afrihost with some other ISP, but yea, Afrihost = IS.

Side: My WoW latency is horrific since this started. Strangely enough though, it's only the WoW ports that are responding so badly.

TIME: 3 Feb 2010 3:41:57 PM
ADDITIONAL: Please take note that SAT3 maintenance is still ongoing and all our links are still running on restoration path SMW3. This means we will still be experiencing increased high latency, as traffic routes are longer. As soon as there are significant changes on the SAT3 maintenance work, we will send an updated notification to that effect.

POINTS OF IMPACT:
Gallo Manor - Johannesburg
Great Westerford - Cape Town
International

OPENING TIME: 20 Jan 2010 5:29:27 PM
CAUSE OF PROBLEM: Telkom Maintenance
SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED: High Latency
SEVERITY: Critical
STATUS: Attending
ATTENDING: Telkom Engineers
ADDITIONAL: Please note that Telkom SA is conducting major maintenance on the shunt fault on Segment 14 of SAT-3, about 627 km from the ACC Beach Manhole. This maintenance will run from the 20-22 January 2010 and resume again on the 29 January to 01 February 2010 within the maintenance window
(00:01 to 04:00 UCT). Due to this maintenance, there will be intermittent high latency to London UK and Paris for the duration of this maintenance.

So, anyone have any news on whether the cable break/ maintenance has been completed or when its going to be completed? My latency is crawling in hell atm...

EDIT: Its been bad for the last 5 days now.

Slow/unuseable 4Mbps line

My line has been dropping intermittently since the beginning of the week. Johannesburg central area.

I called to log a fault but they said they could not find any fault this morning.

It is definitely much worse at night, say after 8PM or so it gets really bad. Can anyone give me an idea whether this could be a problem on my line and nothing to do with the network maintenance?

Downstream SNR: 6 - 9 dB
Upstream SNR: 10 - 11 dB

Downstream Attenuation: 30 - 40 dB
Upstream Attenuation: 30 - 35 dB

the line is mostly dead but when something does come through packets get dropped

internet packets dropped: 4 - 33%

and since it is at it's worst late at night it takes forever (30min+) to get through to a technician. big sigh.

This notice was released earlier today:
Link - All South African international traffic has been re-routed off undersea cable,

Basic issue: Link - All South African international traffic has been re-routed off undersea cable, SAT 3 to SAFE, due to power problems at Abidjan. Users may experience slow response due to high latency.

EDIT: Thanks for the info Globetrotter.

...Sorry if this is a silly question but would this affect my line SNR and attenuation values at all?

AFAIK, no. Seems like the technicians are attending to the problem only when they get a lunch break:cry:

No. Your SNR and attenuation applies to your actual line between you and your exchange.
Line attenuation = Loss of signal over distance
SNR = Basically the measure of the difference between your current SNR and the SNR that is required to keep a reliable service at your connection speed.

Telkom 3g + SAIX = Not too bad.

DL episode from EZtv at around 400kB/s --> peaking at around 450kB/s

I have no access via SAIX - not connecting PPoE - wonder if its a line problem at my house. Worked fine this morning though and we did not have a storm today.
running off NeoTel atm. Webafrica also dead. Modem's adsl light is connecting though but not getting an IP from telkom.
