Hey all ...

The title pretty much sums it up but here is my situation ...

I just moved into a new garden cottage and there is no landline at all ... I am completely frustrated with 8ta and the lack of consistency that 3G brings in my current area

Is there still a way to get ADSL or is 3G the only way ? (can they install a line, is there a fee .. etc)

Regards.

Get a telkom landline first, if you want ADSL. And yes, there are fees involved.

Do they just run a new cable from the street type of thing ?

Also, for gaming and downloads which would be better:

2mb unshaped + uncapped
4mb shaped + uncapped

Take a look at the Telkom Simple plans...its the smoothest way from zero infrastructure to an ADSL line. That covers phone pole to house.

As McD said though...you need *something* near by. Not being physically connect is not a problem but if they aren't going to stick a pile of telephone poles into the ground just for you.

edit: You want Telkom to do as little of the work as possible. If they need to lay cabling on your property they'll charge for it. So imo its better to ask them to create a point somewhere & extend it yourself.

I originally wanted to just extend a point from the main house to the garden cottage but the owners wanted nothing to do with it, that's why I got 8ta ...

But if the main house has a landline then surely it shouldn't cost that much just to run a single line ?

I will have a look at the simple plans to day at work and then see if I can get a hold of a Telkom rep somehow

I gave telkom a call and the lady I spoke with (if she understood what I was trying to say cause I had to repeat it like 7 times) sais that I can get a line installed for free as long as I buy the weekend something package which will cost me like R199 a month for the normal line...

Is this about the right price or are their cheaper lines avail ? (my 3G is freaking out again as usual so I cannot get onto Telkom's site)

Telkom closer package, with self install of ADSL. No installation fees and I think I pay around R157 for the land line and then around R425 for the ADSL line, using Openweb as an ISP.
