Electricity workers still on strike

WHILE worker unions say the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has kick-started the process of paying striking electricity and infrastructure workers’ scarce skills allowances, they have refused to return to work until the money is in their accounts.

Unions representing the workers said they have been informed by city bosses that the payroll office was processing the payments.

Samwu regional secretary Mqondisi Nodongwe said they met with mayor Danny Jordaan, his deputy Bicks Ndoni and chief whip Litho Suka on Wednesday evening, where it was agreed that the scarce skills allowance would be reinstated for the next three months.

“We agreed that we are going to enter into discussions with the leadership over the next three months on this scarce skills matter.

“But it was agreed that scarce skills allowance will be reinstated for three months until we have concluded the discussions,” Nodongwe said.

Imatu regional chairman Chris Hay said he received a call from the municipal pay office early this morning saying that they were processing the payments.

“I have no doubt that the money will be paid out by tomorrow,” Hay said.

Surely the loss of income for the week the workers took part in the strike is going to cost them more than their allowance.
They should have returned when the agreement was reached.
