Zim soldiers run amok as banks run out of cash

By Peta Thornycroft

Zimbabwe soldiers ran amok on the streets of Harare last week as banks ran out of cash for their November salaries and Christmas bonuses.

They, like the rest of the population, are prevented by the central bank from withdrawing more than R7.50 a day, but they couldn't even withdraw that at the end of the week as the mint failed to produce enough cash.

The daily cash withdrawal limit is enough to buy one banana or a quarter of a loaf of bread. In supermarkets the average price of mealie meal is about R90 for 10kg.

Bonuses for what ?

Actually, the 13th cheque is automatic and paid to all Zim civil servants with their November salaries. It has been like this since the brits were there and has nothing to do with "i demand". Jumping to conclusions based on erroneous racial stereotyping is one of England's biggest problems.

The only thing standing between Bob and decapitation is the army. In fact if I were Bob I would make very sure they get there bonuses cause without the army he is fcked....

They are prevented from drawing more than R7 a day, but what about ATM withdrawals, or do they have no such thing anymore?

Have you seen what a big wad of money the people must carry with in order to buy a loaf of bread?

Impractical... and besides, the power/telephone lines probably is down for long times as well...

People are unable to get their money out of their bank in their country.
Perhaps they'll start to realise that this IS their problem, and perhaps they'll start camping out at their leaders homes.

When Mugabe can't pay his army and police force they will return to their homes. When he doesn't have those 2 organisations holding him up he will hold no power and the people will be able to rise up against him - if there are any left with some strength.

To me, this is a positive sign that things will, eventually, be coming to an end.
