NATIONWIDE will begin charging economy-class passengers for food and beverages on its domestic routes from January 16.

There will also no longer be special meal requests in economy class in the domestic network.

According to Nationwide, the move does not make it a low-cost carrier as its business model remains different to those of the LCCs. It said in a statement: “Our customers told us that rather than having a limited range of items for consumption on board, they would prefer a wider selection from which to choose but understood full well the cost implications.”

Business-class passengers can still expect a full, free food and beverage service onboard domestic flights.

Free food and beverages will still be served in all classes on the Johannesburg-Livingstone or Johannesburg-London Gatwick routes.

As long as they actually drop their prices, otherwise no reason to fly with them. SAA provides free food AND they are cheaper than nationwide lately......

Perhaps they are feeling the pinch with state-sponsored competition killer Mango taking to the skies.

I doubt whether the price will change.

I wonder who were the 'customers' that Nationwide talked to?

''Nationwide, sorry, but we don't want free food anymore!''

''We want to pay for it!! Make us pay! Please, Nationwide?''

One of the reasons I preferred Nationwide over Kalula was the basic, but decent free food and beverage on local flights that cost the same.

True.

Two weeks before xmas yours truly decides to go to Durbs from boxing day to new years.

1time was booked solid. Kulula wanted R999 per person one way. SAA came through at R410 pp one way.

OK, we had to fly at... interesting times, to get those prices. Left CT somewhere around 0630 on the 26th, left Durban 0855 on the 1st (no open seats on the 31st of course).

Typical SAA food, not great, not bad. I like baguette type rolls, which is what I got on Nationwide last time I flew with them, but all in all, prettu much the same.

But I thought R1620 return to Durbs for the two of us was pretty good.

For one, I didn't even know that Nationwide had different classes. And secondly, I'd rather pay for something that I want than have something that I don't want for free, Smart move on their part.
