No more money for Post Office bailouts

Hot air

South Africa’s finance minister, Enoch Godongwana, said that the South African Post Office (Sapo) will not receive any more government bailouts should it escape business rescue.
….
However, if it were to receive this bailout, the finance minister has made it clear that it will be tough love from here on out regarding financial assistance from the fiscus.

I can only assume that’s political speak for bailout incoming.

First the treasury said no and now the Comms Minister also says no cash for SAPO.
This might really be the end of SAPO.

We don’t have money to save the Post Office: Malatsi

“The engagement we had with treasury was that we should look within our budget to see if there are monies that we can use towards rescuing the situation at the Post Office,” Malatsi said. “But the truth of the matter is that within the department and the current budget, those resources are just not available.”

Since there are valued service needs (for some) from the PO, why don't they partner with a private interested party?

Of course that private company would have to be allowed majority management control... not sure the ANC GNU will accept that.

All the PO have are lots of rented offices, many in rent arrear, hundreds of vans on hire and lots of useless staff.

What can the value be in that? Goodwill does not exist, unless it is a nostalgia thing, but that does not generate income

Three of the people I know who worked at our local PO which was closed in Sep 2023 rely on SASSA pensions. My neighbour said he saw one ex-staff begging at the traffic lights. They received no severance pay, no pension and the MEDS medical fund are chasing them for arrear contributions
