I was driving my car today and i heard my engine making a noise. Sort of like a tractor noise.

So i went to the Petrol Station and they checked my oil and i had no oil.

The car seems to be driving fine now.

I just wanna know. was my engine making a noise because i had no oil?

Thanks.

You had no oil in your car?

And the oil light didn't go mental at you?

If you had no oil, your engine would have seized up......

You're lucky - by the time my oil light went on the other day the pump and the bearings had gone. :(

I bought the car 2 weeks ago, and everything was fine.

I was driving the car today and the engine made a tractor type noise.

So i got oil put in. and it seems to be running fine now.

I just wanna know. when a car has no oil. does the engine make a loud tractor like noise?

Yes it would make that kind of noise.
That's the good old bearing knock approaching.

What car are we talking about here?

Lucky to have walked away from that one unscathed china!

It's an expensive sound. :(

Happened to me as teenager driving around in my mom's old car.
Driving on the freeway, the sound came along and 200 meters later everything came to a spluttering halt!

No cellphones (or they were'nt really big back then) and I ended up taking a 2.2km walk to my cousin's house to call the parents :erm:

Now you know why it was for sale!! :D

Seriously, if it actually started sounding like a tractor, then it is not a case of maybe the engine is damaged, but how badly is it damaged?!

If the noise went away after adding oil (You didn't say how much) that ws simply the fresh oil taking up some slack...now we have to find out why the engine lost oil in the first place, and work backwards from there...whatever way you look at it, however, I hope you have a healthy bank balance...:(

I put in a can of oil, and the noise was still there, but then it went away. I started up the car again, and its running smoothly now. I dont know if there was oil in the car, I presumed there was, thats why I didnt check. How often should oil anyways be replaced? Is the engine damaged now, or is it fine now, since I dont hear any sounds anymore and its soft.

If you put a can in, surely you checked your dipstick????!!!

That is how one checks to see if oil is in the engine............

BTW, did you put a 5 litre can in or a 500ml??

Best advice is to have the engine looked at asap. The forumites here are spot-on. It could be costly, I should know. Any new car I buy nowadays I have checked by AA beforehand. Saves many a headache and tears as well as money :erm:

I never checked if there was oil in, and when I went to the garage the guy took out the dipstick and said it needs oil, so I put in a 500ml can, and the noise went away. I will put in some more oil tomorrow, I didnt have enough cash on me. But the sound is gone, so is the engine damaged, or is it ok now?

Why dont you go check the dipstick now and see how much oil is in there before you drive it any more. :)

What do you mean by soft?
Is the sound still there?
If it is, that's just looking for trouble.
Rather have it checked out and as mentioned earlier, you'd want to know if it's leaking oil anywhere.

No, there is no sound at all, it runs smooth as when I bought it. It was like a knocking sound, but after the oil was put in, it dissappeared. Is the engine broken now? I dont have cash to check it out atm, but I will buy more oil tomorrow

Mkay. maybe you got lucky, but when you do have the cash, rather have it seen to.
Perhaps one of your family or friends that are knowledgable enough could have a look at the car in the meantime?

That sound was metal on metal , some damadge has been done .

Drain oil and you will find metal filings I think. Maybe drain oil and replace with new oil soon. The least you can do.
