Ahead of a planned national stayaway on Wednesday, government has warned participating public servants that they won’t be paid for the day.

In a statement, the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) says that employees who deliver essential services are not allowed to participate at all during working hours.

For other civil servants, the department has advised all government departments to apply the principle of "no work, no pay".

"Leave will be strictly managed, and no leave will be granted unless under extreme and compelling situations," the department added.

The stayaway has been organised by the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) and Cosatu, in protest of cost of living pressures and the state of the economy.

Demonstrations will be held in the major cities.

But the impact of the stayaway may be more muted than previous shutdowns, after the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) said it would not participate in the strike. This means non-striking workers could still get to work, and the protest may not disrupt public transport.

Problem is, if government staff don't strike, there will hardly be anything happening. The private sector in SA is basically dead.

Private sector "warnings" aren't issued from a central authority like government's. Each company issues these warnings to their union representatives.

"in protest of cost of living pressures and the state of the economy."

Lots of negativity here.

I for one hope this strike is successful and that from Thursday, I will be paid more. Everything I want to buy will be cheaper.

I am sure the majority of Cosatu and Saftu members are not in the public sector.

Think SAMWU, NEHAWU, SADTU, etc.
Technically SAMWU is not part of the public service, at least not in the context of the public service as described here. I don't have the exact numbers, I just know that NUM and NUMSA are the biggest trade unions, SAMWU, SATAWU and the others should make up for more non public service numbers.

Besides SADTU and NEHAWU I can't think of any big unions in the public service, maybe POPCRU? but I don't think they have massive numbers like the others.

I hope so too then we can put up prices because you are being paid more and we can also be paid more. I don't know why we didn't do this earlier.

A small number of people are burning stuff in the middle of town and starting new fires at various other places. Mostly to prevent people from going to work.

Police are only present on the edge of town and not doing anything to remove the fires. Private security is doing a sterling job of keeping the neighborhood safe.

My kid made it out on the bus only just in time. Most of the other kids stayed home though.

Those are WMC puppets who are doing this to sodden the reputation of the unions.
Please ignore them.

The previous time many businesses were damaged and even recycling bins burned down. Not something that can be ignored.
