This is some upgrade detail I have been "given":

Brixton - Radiokop - Mintek - Randburg Metro - Aasvoelkop Towers were upgraded today. The NodeB's are now running version 5.0.1 firmware.
All towers are to be upgraded at a rate of 6 per day between 01:00 and 06:00 every day until complete.

Please can anyone on the above 5 towers give us some feedback
on the ping times and packet loss etc.
I would imagine that your modem firmware could now be upgraded
to version 5 too! (Please give us a ver.4 to ver.5 comparison too!)

edit - ProAsm's site has the ver 5.0.1.40y firmware here: http://www.unrealza.co.za/files/other/IPWP1CF5.0.1.40y.exe

Heya dbn ... well, I'll say that the latency has stabilized. but when it spikes, it spikes like crazy (in excess of 2500ms).

Latency is still high on the tower though - ave 308ms over the last hour.

Packet loss around 6%. I'm running 4.2.1.8 firmware ... will do upgrade to v5 tonight and provide additional feedback. (Not at home at the moment ... )

For specifics on my comments have a look at : http://riggerman.dyndns.org/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi?target=SouthAfrica.Sentech

Just had a look on the software update site ... v5 firmware of the clients not yet officially available.

Dbn - could you be "given" the latest v5 by any change ? ... If so post it on to me and I'll upgrade my unit 2nite to test it.

hehe, Uhm... I have that version .. what I was hoping is that if there's a new "South African brew" version for the tower that there may be an SA version for the clients ;-)

Will try though and give feedback

So THATS why my torrents are running so slow and why my tower just disconnected? :) well, could be slow because of other reasons, going to try and upgrade the firmware and see what happens

Help save the bandwidth. Decent download speeds for TheRodent! Stop downloading now!!!

Just upgraded to 5.0.1.40y firmware. Single thread d/l from tucows.is running at 10.7 kB/s. Still fairly high packet loss though.

Ping statistics for 196.35.72.14:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 18, Lost = 2 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 78ms, Maximum = 390ms, Average = 133ms

Doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Tower: Mintek (82 was 12) - Signal: 19% - Firmware: 5.0.1.40y - 128k - Smoothwall and PPPoE

I had a feeling they were upgrading tower firmware, dbnnet, are you sure they only started today, and didn't do an upgrade to fourways exchange on Sunday, as I said in the technical forum, things changed dramatically on sunday, and I thought it related to firmware.

If they did change 22/66 firmware over the weekend, thats what caused my extreme packetLoss problem.
Upgrading on the client side (ie mine) to the version available at unrealza, didn't do much!

Hopefully I'm wrong, and the packetLoss and FW upgrade are independant events.

Regardt, you're little graphs will be the key to discovering if the events are independant, if you're graphs vary heavily from yesterday to today, the firmwares a definite number on our baddy list.
what are the gray areas on the upper section of those graphs??

Well Earlier before I upgraded with the 4.2.1.8 drivers the speeds on the net were almost none existant it seems that you need the new v5 firmware to get any type of speed back when your node is updated... Speeds are still not great but better than the 20kbit/s I was getting but pings are very spiky.

Well,

I've just upgraded to the v5 firmware.

Now to let the graphs run and see where we're at.

As to the "grey area" ... basically, every 5 minutes 20 ping packets are sent out. The grey areas shows pings that deviated from the averages.

Initial testing is NOT proving positive....

I've had reasonable good throughput on multithreaded connections but single threads still creates stacks of "dead time"...

Completely subjectively and not doing any thorough testing, just quick pings: Changed to v.5.0.1.40y showed timeouts all the time. Downgraded to v.4.2.1.8 - timeouts again. Down to v.4.2.1.6 and it's pretty OK now. On tower 22 (was 82) in Randburg CBD which was upgraded this morning at 4:00 to 4:30.

/me thinks we got a dud version of the firmware, the 'y' at the end is worrying, maybe its particular to a certain setup, such as the 6 panel towers used in some of the not so cheap ISP's.

I'll also try 4.2.1.6 later 2nite, and if it helps, keep it until Sentech releases the official update.
Will post my results, I also have another [ii]"theory"[/i] to test!!
