i needed to get a phone for company driver, not too expensive, as their phones tend to disappear...
couldn't get decent phone for around R700-R800, with at least 4.5" screen at Pep, Vodacom, MTN etc.
so when the Nokia 1 came as 'special' at GAME on weekend, i figured, perhaps Nokia not a bad option, even if a bit more expensive than the cheapie brands. Nokia 'should' be a bit more reliable, better performing than those unknown Pepstore brands

been 'playing' with it for past few days, just to get a feel for it, and how it goes, before handing to driver.

sofar, it seems pretty OK.... not too much lag for the low end performance, only 8Gb RAM, so added SD card that you can select as external memory or use as internal memory for all phone usage.
slight feeling the screen is not as responsive to touch as i'm used to in a more expensive phone, but surely still better than i remember on the sub R700 phones, like the voda kicka etc.

quite a 'big' size battery, so battery life looks to be quite good... used the GPS while driving to work this AM, more than hour, and took quite a few different routes, other than suggested, as i have my preferred route, so a few reroutes needed, and battery level didn't dip too much.

sofar, not yet disappointed :) it could be good option for sub-R1000 users

Making the comparison:

Android 6.0 vs Android 8.1 Go.

Software is the biggest motivation for me when I buy a phone.
It is becoming more of a consideration for sure. 8gb memory on 6.0 or older is problematic. Less so on 7 or newer.

Perfect phone?

480x854 resolution, Mediatek MT6737M, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 480p video?

Maybe it's perfect in a world populated by sajunkies....

For most of users, Nokia 1 is a perfect phone and an excellent deal for R999.

Id stop short of saying that, id say 80% of Android users that do basic things will get along just fine

question remains,

do you game a lot?
do you photograph a lot?
are you an Iphone M0ron thats brain-dead really? and has more money then brains?:crylaugh:

then make the decision, based on that.

80% of people that have a old phone and want something cheap and does everything a smartphone should, this will do pretty darn well.

But does Apple give you a display with a perfect 480x854 pixel resolution? Bet they don't!!!

Of course not... they think for you and TELL you that you want MOAR pixels....

So I went from a 5 to the 1... The 1 is a great phone, but at the price you inevitably get less seeing as you pay less. It feels snappier than the 2, that's Go for you, but Go apps are very lightweight. I should mention that I upgraded my 2 to 8.1 beta and it is a very nice improvement.

What I miss is the following :

OK Google
Android Wear
Maps Location Sharing
Google Now news and weather

I'll see how think go with this little phone, I like the way it feels an looks.

Completely irrelevant twaddle in this thread.

The more a device complies with the user's use case the "better" that device is, so if a user only wants to call, SMS and check the time then a phone able of doing only those things is technically the best phone.

People still use this phone? 8GB storage in 2020?

I find it quite funny that this phone has less storage than the RAM in my phone...

If all you want is calls, SMS and checking the time a feature phone would probably be better for you.

Considering I went from a Nokia 5 straight to the 1 and it was fine - I agree. Sure it is a smaller and a bit slower, but it is running Android 9 like my Mi A2 Lite and it works perfectly still. I like this little phone.
