I use my N6630 phone as a modem for my laptop. The N6630 is 3G capable, but when I got it I kept my old sim card (32K) which I have had for ages.

I have therefore assumed that when I connect to internet using the N6630 with 32K sim, that I only connect at GPRS speeds.

I then enquired at my MTN service provider, Supercall, about getting a 3G capable sim (e.g. the USIM 3G 128K card) to use in my phone, to achieve 3G speeds when connecting the internet.

They responded (very quickly, and in-depth .... thank you!) that my "old" 32K sim is in fact 3G capable, and that the only benefit I would get by upgrading the current card is more memory capability. They said...:
The USIM gives more memory capacity which we have at 128K. We have tested the 32K sim (also compatible to 3g) on 3G handsets and the speed is the same regardless of the sim card. The quality you receive on 3G is based on your reception strength.

Therefore to answer your question a 32k sim card is compatible to the 3G network. Based on the common reasons one would require the 3G facility, going for a USIM -128K sim card will give you more memory
.

Now, my questions ...

can anyone here (perhaps MTN DD??) confirm I can get 3G connection with my old 32K card?

Would there be any benefit upgrading to the USIM 128K card?

Supercall also said that:
Current 3G handsets are not compatible however new HSDPA enabled handsets are likely to only become available later this year. Presently you can only access HSDPA network via a 3G HSDPA DATA CARD

Anyone got any more information on HSDPA compatible phones?

Yes 3G will work with the 32K sim the only thing that will not work is Videomail as on the network it is previsioned for a 3G sim only.

HSDPA phones aren't out in SA as yet MTN and Vodacom are busy testing the Samsung at the moment, will advise and let you know about that.

Many thanks MTNDD ...

My phone (N6630) is GPRS, EDGE (SGPRS), and 3G capable, and you have confirmed that my existing 32K sim is capable of 3G connection.

In my phone settings (dowwnloaded from MTN) I have many access points listed .... all GPRS.

If my phone, and sim, are 3G and EDGE capable, should I not also have the 3G and EDGE connection settings listed?

Or is the connection seamless between 3G / EDGE / GPRS dependant on signal, with only the GPRS settings listed?

The max. connection speed I attain is a measly 69 kbps, about 8 KB per second!

Thanks in advance

The GPRS settings on your phone are sifichant - There are no dial-up connections for Edge, 3G you use the standard GPRS settings dependent on which area you're in, what time of the day you trying to log on traffic on the network and so forth.

With your phone does it say 3G on the signal bar?

A sim will not affect a 3G device, if you have a 3G phone and a 32K sim 3G will work. but those speeds you're getting don't sound right at all.

Is 3G speeds not supposed to be constant? (STUPID QUESTION, BUT THATS WHAT A CERTAIN OPERATOR TOLD ME ONCE)

Speeds will never be constant, as it's dependant on a lot of things

How many people are connected at the point in time, area device, hardware

Telkom T1 links and so forth

Once again, Thanks MTNDD ....
Yes - I do (occasionally:mad: ) get the 3G image at the bottom of the signal bar, but I also realise that it depends on where I am. The new MTN coverage map shows I am well within the 3G / HSDPA coverage ( ...outside, 95% probability - HA HA  ) but the reality is that I, and some mates of mine that have the HSDPA data cards, never get 3G reception at my home. Vodacom works OK, so maybe it's time after, over 10 years, to change SP's.

Looks like I will have to be satisfied with typically slow SA connections. But thanks for all your information - you do a great job here MTNDD! Now if only Telkom had someone like you there ...

@atomcrusher

We wouldn't like to lose you to Vodacom after 10 years I wish there was something I could do! But as far as coverage roll out goes I have no say in speeding things up just making them aware of what's happening.

Thanks for the compliment I'll continue doing my best but I guess there are always going to be situations like this where I physically can't do anything.

nokia 6630 as a lappy modem

hi,
i came accross a 6630 at a boot sale fer a tenner,i have a load of cables so i got the old dejan software+tried 2 unlock, think the firmware is the one that cant be done by cable+code

anyhoo i notice that it conmes up as modem in windows-so can anyone post the link to the software needed for the laptop i have

a nokia pc suite
dku5 cable+drivers(but i still cant unlock-GET FBUS CONNECT ERROR)-I used 2 unlock fones so im not makin errors myself there is clearly a problem even tho i can clearly see a connection between the lappy+the fone

Also can anyone tell me
how do i find out what firmware im using(never used nox b4 always had sammys) ?
can this be changed+2 accomodate the unlock-as if i take it to the local market wont he use a cable+code too?(granted his will be better) ?

many thanks,doc

@ doctorpsylus

All you need is the Nokia PC Suite software, and the software will detect the 6630, and set it up as a modem. Software will ask you to connect the phone (6630 > USB cable) after PC Suite installation, and you need to select the service provider you use. A modem connection is created under "control panel>phone and modems> modems"
