Nokia Lumia 1520 South African prices announced

Would I use this phone? Gladly.

At the RRP cited by Vodacom? Absolutely not.

That sort of pricing feels like daylight robbery.

:(

Meanwhile in Russia...They really need to price these better against the competition.

Launched at same price as here. R7800 after their price-cut (been on the market for 3 months) - I see the Galaxy Note 3 is around R7500-R7700 now .. so all looks par for the course.

Apart from the fact the Note 3 is the better device? The 1520 is a good phone, I'm not going to change ecosystems if it's not going to save me money.

Note 3 is very nice.
L1520 is very very nice. ;)

Ecosystems? Once you get over 12849 fart apps, it's a wash, really.

Well if you download everything on the chart, sure. I have a lot of paid for apps which I use frequently that would cost me quite a bit to replace on the WP platform, if they're there of course.

"better" how? CPU, screen, etc are similarly specced - Nokia obviously has the better camera, which would account for the slight price bump.

These 2 Ecosystems are mature and good - it's down personal preference, can't really bring that in to the pricing.

They are very equal performers but if you want to penetrate the market you need to make it more appealing.

You mean aesthetics? Again, personal preference, not a measure of "better/worse" ... Lumia design is well loved. It's not like the Note 3 is a triumph of beautiful design! Faux leather stitching on the back... wtf?!

We're talking about justifying the price. What's inside the Lumia 1520 is close enough to the Note 3 to justify it's price.

Aesthetics? No, Nokia do make better looking handsets, even in those colours. I'm talking about the much larger market share Android has over WP, Microsoft were too late to the party and now they are clambering with pathetic marketing campaigns and even bowing to introducing an Android based handset, even after Microsoft bought them?

The OS share is not an Android share qua Android - it's a Samsung share that happens to be Android. Mostly. Other Android handset makers are also-rans.

Similarly with WP share - for many it's a Nokia choice first, not a WP choice, though WP has its adherents.

Mighty Samsung out manufactures and out markets everyone else. Kudos to them.

I don't think that Android handset will happen - it doesn't make sense on any level.

This started off as "1520 is daylight robbery" - which it plainly isn't - and as we can see, it's priced well against the competition - Note 3 being an example - and they can boast at the same price point they have a bigger screen, and better camera. That's the appeal. "Spend the same, get more" is as good as "get the same for a bit less".

For the popularity of the phone it is daylight robbery.
If they want to get market share then they need to price better than that.
Im due for an upgrade and was considering this handset but why would I take this over a note3(boring I know)
Sure WP is maturing but its nothing like the levels of android or even ios for that matter.

Not every company has the luxury of selling their flagship devices at or below cost to get marketshare. Popularity has nothing at all to do with whether it's overpriced or not. They could have gone the route of the 6.4" Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which goes for around R7k, but has a pedestrian 8mp camera and half the RAM to drive the price down, but I guess that's what the 1320 is for - I'm assuming that was put out to compete on price, based on prices around the world that should be in the R4k-R5k range.

Why would you take it over a note3? Well, you're getting more phone for the same price I guess would be one answer. It's a great productivity device, you'll probably need to buy less apps to get more done with it. The WP ecosystem does have some advantages, despite its relative immaturity.

Over Christmas friend of mine bought 1520 in Bulgaria for 520 euro. Samsung Note 3 is 579. Different markets different prices. Obviously who is in charge of prices in SA does not care, or Nokia does not give a damn about South African market.
