Nokia N70 connection problems

I have setup many phones for Vodacom 3G via USB or bluetooth. At least 20. It is always a huge hassle to get things working. So many bugs, setup problems, stability problems etc...

My simple question is. How can Vodacom expect normal people to set it up themselves? You really need to be an expert and you need huge amounts of patience. Vodacom should look at making this process easier for normal end users. There must be a way.

My latest problem:

Setup Nokia N70 via bluetooth. Got it connected after I had to switch to a different bluetooth dongle brand. I find that BlueSoleil, as a software interface works better than most.

The problem is that I am connected, but I get those annoying "page not found" messages for any web page. I could however connect to web pages on the phone itself. Switching to my Samsung ZV10 on exactly the same setup, solves the problems.

In my mind this proves one of the following

1) Issue with the Nokia firmware?
2) Issues with the Nokia firmware and bluetooth software combination?
3) Problems with the specific mobile number on the Vodacom network?

Any Ideas?

The N70 is Vodafone branded. When connected via the modem, I can see that the vlive APN is used. This did not bother me too much, because I can connect to the internet with my Samsung ZV10 via the vlive APN.

Maby someone have had similar problems?

I can tell you N70 is a problematic phone, it's almost a 6680 with improved camera and new cover, My dad's vodafone branded N70 arrived last week, delivered by Nahua Mobile and I open the box, use the new 64K sim card provided with, switch on the phone and it just halt at Nokia white screen, tried other 3 different vodacom 32K sim, no luck, Tried to use the 3 buttons combination to format the phone, won't respond to the command, my dad took back to vodaworld and nashua mobile stupid assistant told him sim is not activated and send him back.......
Some of my other friends who also had this phone had problems too, heard rumour that because Nokia put too much c*ap into the phone while not upgrade its hardware properly from 6680 cos phone won't cope....( I know I know phone's ROM or some memory is bigger than 6680 but why so many problems.....)

Is it just me, or has Nokia made some major mistakes with its phones, starting with the 6680. It seems nearly all new Nokia phones have major problems these days...

As a former longtime Nokia fan, I've decided to rather get myself an i-Mate JasJar instead of another Nokia - I will rather put up with a JasJar with its own problems than deal with a problematic Nokia that doesn't have most of the features I need.

I agree. If you go by the reviews on the web these days, you would find that Sony-Ericsson almost always out performs Nokias in the ratings.

Anyway... maby I must try a firmware update. Have someone had problems doing it with a Vodafone Nokia N70?

I could also not get the USB modem working on the phone. Always got the "could not open port" problems. It was the same with the bluetooth modem, until I changed to different dongle manufacturer.

I guess I should try the phone on another PC. Just to change something.

Just a comment about Bluetooth - that's another problem area [not just with Bluetooth phones] but it appears with the Bluetooth dongle manufacturers as well - Bluetooth is supposed to be standardized, and in theory one should be able to get recent Bluetooth devices and recent Bluetooth dongles to talk to one another, but in practice, there are too many Bluetooth dongle wannabees that don't actually make the grade, now couple that with a Bluetooth Nokia phone and you have major problems :(.

I have a problem where I used to be able to connect my N70 to the PC via USB. I would then use it as a modem. Then one day, I plugged the phone in, the software connects to the phone, but a error message appears when it picks up the modem. the message is "The required section was not found in the INF". The same happens on a different PC, I have also upgraded the software at the Customer Care shop.

No luck and no modem anymore.

Not trying to argue the point, but you can't really expect Vodacom to take responsibility for issues like Bluetooth hassles between PC's and mobile devices.

AS you said yourself, switching to another Bluetooth adaptor on the PC solved the problem. How could Vodacom have made it easier in this case?

Areas where Vodacom should take responsibility is with the data cards + VMC and browsing directly on phones as they can still control these, to an extent at least.

But permutations outside of this becomes more difficult, as you can imagine.

The call desk will always try and help but as you'll agree, the permutations becomes endless.

In any case, have you tried changing the proxy settings for the 'page not found' errors?

Did try and change proxy settings. In IE and on phone. No Luck.

I am not saying Vodacom is responsible for anything. I am trying to say that they should work on something to make it all easier for the customer to install. I am trying to make suggestions to make Vodacom succesfull. I dont think for one moment that it will be an easy task.

Specifically in the case of Bluetooth [adapter] dongles, perhaps Vodacom should publish the makes & models that Vodacom uses to successfully test Bluetooth with cellery phones - anything else used by a customer that doesn't work properly, is not a support issue for Vodacom to deal with, but rather for the manufacturers of the Bluetooth devices to deal with.

The fact that there are bluetooth, cable driver and other compatibility hassles and issues, just makes it nearly impossible for any normal person to install. Vodacom needs to look at this. Why cant they write software that covers the installation for every single mobile phone? This software can contain the setup for all mobile, OS and conectivity options. The software could be updated with every release of new phone onto the market.

It is not Vodacom's responsibility, but it is defenately in their best interest. Just think how many people would have switched ages ago if it where easy to install. People have absolutely no clue how to even approach it.

Yes IC. I like youre idea. That could be done right away. It would only help us techies though.

The normal person wants to slap in a CD; answer some questions about the connection options and whala! After this his PC drivers must be updated, dialup connection pre-configured and so on and so on....

It will take a lot form Vodacom, but there is potetially a huge return on investment.

IMO it would be near impossible to create an integrated installation application that covers every single cellery phone, specifically to install the cellery phone manufacturer's software [in particular drivers] - why re-invent the wheel here - cellery phone manufacturers have their own software and drivers packaged in installation applications?

Apart from that, there are 2 options available to the less technically minded, that want to use their cellery phone as a modem for internet access:
  1. Call a friend that is technically minded to help get it all going;
  2. Vodacom has walkin technical centres [one of them at Vodaworld in Midrand] where customers can take their PCs etc to get assistance.
For those that are technically minded, the best option is to follow a process of elimination when problem solving - limit the number of variables that might be causing a problem.

Must be a very good friend. It usually takes hours to solve the installation problem. That is exactly why I am making these statements. I am usually that friend. I dont see my family anymore.
