Good Day All. I am still on hold (35min and counting) with Vodacom's Data helpdesk (082155), so it will be interesting to see who I get a response from first, Vodacom or this forum :)

When i connect to the internet using my laptop via bluetooth, I am connecting and authenticating to the network, but I am not able to browse or recieive mail. My phone shows and active 3g connection, by any request to the www just times out.

Vodacom have just (they answered before I finished typing) that I can only achieve 3g speeds if I conect to the phone via the USB interface. Hmmm, now that is strange, can anyone verfiy this?

Regards,
Mighty Mouse

Configuration:-

Shiny New Apple MacBook Pro with all options (Drool Drool)
OSX 10.4.6
Nokia N70

You should be able to connect at both GPRS and 3G Speeds. How do you know that you are connecting at only GPRS speeds?

If you are not in a 3G area you will connect at GPRS speeds only. Does your phone display a little 3G icon on the screen? If not, you probably only going to connect on GPRS.

Being able to achieve 3g speeds only if you conect to the phone via the USB interface is rubbish. I use bluetooth and 3G together. Make sure your modem port speed is not limiting the connection speed. It should be set to 460800bps.

hi Doni,

i get the 3G Symbol with full signal strength. I supect it is GPRS cause it is just sooo slow. I use MAC OSX 10.4.6, so no need to change or check port speeds there. Do you use the *99***1# number to connect. (I suspected the bluetooth v.s. usb was rubbish as well.)

thanks

The plot thickens - nokia n70 +laptop.

Sorry guys (and gals) In fact, while I get lots of activity (send and receive) it does not connect me to the internet at all.

I must be missing some configuration settings or something!

Try the speed tests at http://www.mybroadband.co.za/myadsl/speedtest.php

Not sure on the exact speeds you should be getting between 3G and GPRS.

I use *99# to connect. But this should not make a difference.

I am not familiar with Mac's but you need to make sure that modem ports speeds are high enough. Test the speed of the bluetooth connection as well. It may be limiting the connection speed somehow. What happens if you use the USB cable?

Maybe its a DNS issue, you using more than one internet connection on the computer? CHeck that the nokia connection is using the following DNS servers:

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 196.25.255.34
196.25.255.3

Other than that, don't know what else as I am not at all familiar with Mac's. I am sure somebody else out there will supply you with help.

My Configuration settings are:

Service provider - None
Account name - None
User Name - None
Password - None
Telephone Number - *99#
Connection Type - PPP

The connetcion i get is described in unix as ppp0: flags=8051<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 10.45.191.64 --> 10.6.6.6 netmask 0xff000000

and it does go through the Connecting, Authenticating process. I just cant connect to the www after that.
I have tried the DNS settings you have given me, but no luck.

Thanks for the help

P.s. i know I have a good 3G signal cause I have just been watch Zuma's rape trial on live tv - VIVA VODACOM VIVA E.TV

Mighty

I have exactly the same problem (PC, N70, connecting with GPRS). Read all about it here...

http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=512016#post512016

I also have a 3G card, which I know you have to set to ONLY use 3G. The card and the phone seem to want to switch to what ever the strongest signal is, hence the fact that it uses GPRS if you don't force it to use 3G.

Unfortunately, there is no way to force this otherwise brilliant phone to use 3G. I have seen how it switches from 3G to GPRS, while loading www.news24.co.za. There was such a majour slowdown in tranmission speed, that I ended up waiting about 2 minutes for the home page to appear.

Vodacom3G, can't you get in touch with Nokia and ask them for a solution? This phone might as well not be a 3G phone, if we can't force it to use 3G. Even 155 tells us to force 3G connections.

3GisDaMan,

Well you have gone further than I have! I cant even get GPRS to work. Oh, I connect just fine, but not able to browse anyhting. I do get a 3G connection, but it appears my settings might not be correct for internet access.

I have sen on the phone that you can select GSM only or Automatic, no 3g Only option. I supect this is because 3g coverage is very limited, so if you chose 3g only, you would drop MANY MANY calls.

I absolutely agree. Why can't Nokia just add one more setting under network settings to use 3G only?

If you want to use 3G often I think buying a device that can't be forced to 3G is not useful.
Otherwise let's hope someone writes/leaks a netmonitor version for N series phones.

Was not aware that you were not able to have a 3G only connection with the phone - That sux!

However, there is probably an AT string that you could add to the modem initialization string which could force it to use 3G only. There has to be. As for the supplied software it does not offer the option to add it so you would probably have to add it manually.

Control Panel -> Phone and Modem options -> Bluetooth Modem Properties -> Advanced -> Extra initialization commands:

Mine is currently set to: "AT+CGDCONT=,,"internet"<cr>" The Internet APN. Adding an extra string should be easy.

Does anybody have the Nokia AT command set so that we could see if we could force this thing to do 3G only? This will only work when using your phone as a modem though, you will still not be able to force your phone to use 3G, ie when viewing wap pages on your phone etc..

I have looked on the Nokia forums and cannot find anything relating to the AT command sets. Will let you know if i find anything.

Did you try the USB cable?

I also use the USB cable (as opposed to surfing directly with the phone), and still it switch to GPRS all the time.

hey guys.

a few days ago I got the connection working over bluetooth on an N70.

The number *99# doesn't seem to do sweet FA... but speaking to the guys at vodacom data desk, he told me to use *99***1# and then it seemed to work just fine... maybe try that.
