Nokia Phonebook Bug

Dunno if this has been discussed before but here goes:

I've noticed this behaviour on ALL Nokias, even back in the days on the 2110i. Easy to replicate too - punch in any amount of random numbers followed by the last 7 digits of any name in your phone book. Press dial. Your Nokia will incorrectly resolve the name.

I don't know why Nokia chose to match only the last 7 digits but it can be very inconvenient. I often dial numbers manually without looking at the keypad and just glance at the screen to see if the name pops up (implying that I dialled correctly) just to be greeted with a "With WHO??"

Can somebody with a non-Nokia check whether their mobiles display the same behaviour?

I noticed this problem a while back when I got the cellc 084 version of my home phone number.

How do you do it?

Easiest way to do it is call yourself from say your home phone after editing that number in your address book - eg change 012 123 4567 to 999 123 4567.

To clarify: If I have bwana's number listed in my phonebook as +27821234567 then I can, on ANY Nokia, dial 294763994047390217471234567 and the name will still pop up as bwana, even tho the wrong number is being dialled.

I checked with a MOTO at work and that was also fine.... so:

WinMobile, SE, MOTO - 1
Nokia - 0

anyway tried it on my Nokia E70 and it does not work - says number not valid.

Tried using ony the last 7 numbers alone ot dial on my HTC s620 and resolved it to the correct name in my phonebook!

I always thought it was a feature so that if you were out of the country it would link the last seven or so digits with any international dialing code and associate it with a phone book entry.

I've got my own theory about this(Let me try):I think Nokia must have thought to themselves that look in every country the last 7 digits are unique to one telephone no or cell no,No two set of last 7 digits will ever be the same,therefore the nokia phones use the last 7 digits to identify the phone book name,thus ignoring any numbers preceding that,which maybe be local codes/international codes.Hows that?

dialed like 20 numbers .. then put the last 7 as the last seven of my GF's number.. and it phoned her... so ya
