Nokia unveils budget Asha touchscreen phones

Struggling mobile phone maker Nokia Oyj has unveiled its first full touchscreen phones aimed at the budget end of the market, as it looks to fill a gap in its product range and catch up with rivals, particularly in emerging markets...

I think even these Symbian phones will outsell WP7.

The Nokia Asha 305 & 306 has resistive touchscreens with 240x400 resolutions, 10MB internal storage and 32MB Ram? These phones are even worse than the dated Nokia 5230 & 5800. How will this compete with the cheapest of Android phones?

Nokia never learn, do they?

Hey, didn't you hear? Some new guy came in yesterday to rant about how awesome Nokia's new camera with calling ability is. The specs were all significantly below or at most equal to the Galaxy S3, apart from the camera which has a much higher resolution (I know, reeaaally important, because the limiting factor in phone photos is totally the resolution and nothing to do with the tiny lens). He was going on about how unfair it was to give the 2 equal scores since clearly a better camera more than makes up for the clunky OS, single core CPU and low-res display.

There's definitely still a market out there for obsolete tech. If they're comparing that thing with a Galaxy S3, they might see this as competition for e.g the Desire S by the same "logic".

Where did you get that information?

...the Asha 311 will sit on top of the newly formed range of devices. The feature phone sports a CPU clocked at 1GHz and 256MB of internal memory, which can be further expanded through a microSD card slot. A 3.2MP camera can be found on the back of the device. The screen is a 3.0” capacitive touch unit with WQVGA resolution. Connectivity is fully covered with Bluetooth 2.1, pentaband WCDMA, microUSB port, and a 3,5mm audio jack. Accelerometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor complete the spec sheet, and make it worthy for any budget minded smartphone. Its measures are 106 mm x 52 mm x 12.9 mm, while its weight is 95 grams. A 1110mAh battery powers the handset.

Next, we have the dual-SIM Nokia Asha 305. The handset will offer a 3" resistive touch screen with WQVGA resolution. A 2MP camera, microSD card slot and dual-band GSM/EDGE connectivity are part of the specs too. Just like in the case of its bigger brother, the Asha 305 sports Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB 2.0 connector, 3.5 mm audio jack, and accelerometer. The handset's measures are 110.3 mm x 53.8 mm x 12.8 mm, while its weight is 98.3 grams. It is powered by the same 1110mAh battery as the Asha 311.

As its name suggests, the Nokia Asha 306 is rather closely related to the 305. In addition to its specs, the 306 offers WLAN, as well as video streaming over both GPRS and WLAN.

Thanks for the links guys.

lolwhut @ 10 MB, 64 MB ROM, 32 MB RAM

LOL

A giant step backwards!

No ways... that's just plain dof.

Heh, heh, heh...yeah...it's pretty lonely at the bottom.
You'd also try and convince yourself that features like those are more important if you were there, ok?! :p

Sheesh this company, really Nokia you starting to look pathetic compared to your competitors. Anyone who buys this needs a huge slap. This is outdated old technology and anyone who denies it is living in the past!

Disgusting!

They are feature phones meant for people on very, very tight budgets. So calm down with all of the flaming. :D

I'm assuming (hoping) the 808 - aka Nokia's new camera with calling ability - will be substantially cheaper than the Galaxy S3, so I do think the comparison is unfair. If it costs the same then compare away and the S3 will obviously come out on top.

Nope no body wants that OS:erm:

Series 40 ..is used for these phones

I thought Series 40 = a version of Symbian for low spec phones.
From what I remember on my old Nokias, they had another version called Symbian Series 60

There are no such things as Symbian Series 40 or Series 60.

Nokia Series 40 is based on Nokia's proprietary operating system. For third-party application development, you can use Java ME and MIDP, Flash Lite or widgets (i.e. XHTML+CSS+JavaScript).

Nokia S60 is based on Symbian OS. In addition to what you can use on Series 40 for third-party application development, there are the options of using C/C++, Python for S60, Perl, Ruby, etc. (though the last two do not yet have significant community traction).

According to GSMArena, the launch price is the same.
