I think I found a product. Limax. Non line of sight. Uses 800Mhz so the signal can bend. Gives up to 3meg speed and cost is low. Has anybody used it before?

Is that in license exempt band? I don't know the exempt bands of by heart, so I'm not sure. Again, it will depend on the obstruction - even an 800 MHz (with a capital "H" :p ) won't go over an obstruction that's too high. 800 MHz is fairly low, so it should give you a lot of reach. Last thing - that 3Mbps will be for a good signal. Your signal won't be good, so your throughput will probably be much less.

800 MHz is not exempt. 868 MHz is but with a bandwidth of about 1 MHz (would be herculean to get 3Mbps at 30 km with that little BW).

If it is in licensed band rather stay away. ICASA might not be good, but if someone should complain about you causing interference, they will eventually investigate and you will have to switch off. They could even lay charges if they had a bad hair day.

BTW - I suspect that CZ means that the equipment is ICASA type approved. That means that you may operate it, if you have spectrum allocated to you in that band. An operator may not even operate equipment in their own bands if it is not ICASA type approved.

After getting ADSL at our office in 2003 I wanted to access it from home but I didn't have line of sight. So I decided to set up a relay in the mountain. I used it for almost two years, at first from Cape Town and later from the West Coast 30 km's away. I had to hike up once a month and swap out a car battery!

The "rock" idea is brilliant! Any pics of it with the external antenna?

Spoke to Jan again. The equipment is ICASA approved and licensed. He said the equipment was originally designed for Telkom. This equipment is good for voice and data. He stated to me that the power is to low to interfere with other RF equipment and that people mount these antennas next to microtik without causing any interference. I am going to contact somebody in Parys that is using this equipment for a demo. Apparently it is set up to test. The distance is 38km and has a hill in between. I will go check and report back.

Irrelevant, still is in licensed spectrum. You're risking a hefty fine and jail time unless you apply to ICASA for spectrum. And trust me, when the premium stuff costs 100's of millions or Rand, spectrum policing is the one thing they don't take lightly.
