Non-Telkom ISP Accounts get no IP on ADSL

My Telkom DoBroadband account gets an immediate IP assigned, but other ISP accounts like WebAfrica and Afrihost does not get an IP assigned even after 'Connection established'. I monitor my Mega 200VWR router status to see what IP is assigned, but for other ISP's the IP remains 0.0.0.0.

I have successfully used my WA and Afrihost accounts in the past with no problems, although since last month I've had this problem. I hope it is not Telkom changing settings to dissuade me from using other ISP accounts.

I've just spoken to Afrihost, and they say that I have an IP assigned on their end, but not at my router. After suffering through their noob troubleshooting list, and after asking me to check my TCP settings on my Local Area connection when I repeatedly stated that I'm using a wireless connection, they realized they had no clue what is going on and they can't help me.

I'll get Telkom on the horn tomorrow, but in the meantime I believe you guys know exactly where in the network the problem occurs. Any parted knowledge will be appreciated.

explain exactly what you are doing. are you connecting via a pppoe via wireless to your router?

If you are the problem seems to be lack of dhcp from rouer wireless

Yes I am using the standard PPPoE ADSL connection and connecting my PC to the router through wireless. The LAN DHCP settings on the router has never changed, and the wireless connection is just fine. I've used these same settings for more than a year.

I only change the ISP account username and password, then if it is my DoBroadband account it instantly establishes a connection and gets an internet IP, but then I change the username and password to WA or Afrihost and it states 'Connection established' but with 0.0.0.0 as internet IP. I can then enter the DoBroadband account again and it will instantly receive an internet IP, but it will fail to do so for WA or Afrihost. I have waited tens of minutes in the past to see if an ip will be assigned but it just switches between 'Attempting to connect' and 'Connection established' with 0.0.0.0 as internet IP.

I did exactly these changes many times a month in the past, changing accounts back and forth and it never failed to instantly assign an internet IP, but now for some reason I only get an internet IP with my DoBroadband account.

I suspect the problem is somewhere in Telkom's network, but I don't know enough to know exactly where. I will be grateful for anyone's insight.

Try and create a new PPPoE connection from scratch. In XP go to network connections then add new connection.

Options are:

Connect to the internet

Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password.

I get "Error 678: The remote computer did not respond." with the WAN Miniport connection attempt. What exactly should the router settings be, username and password etc, for me to dail through XP?

I need to get the internet IP assigned at the router, like it has always been done. There is definitely a problem with Telkom's network, so I hope they can understand what I'm going to explain to them tomorrow.

When I dial a PPPoE connection, my router list's my IP as n/a. I believe that is because my pc has the IP and not the router

Problem solved: Change Connection Encapsulation from PPPoE to PPPoE with Pass-through.

Cudo's to Telkom tech support for suggesting that on the 3rd try when neither WA nor Afrihost had a clue.

This is interesting considering you're not using PPPOE through the router, rather from the router.

But hey, if it works, move onto other battles.

I suspect that WebAfrica's authentication server is using a newer version of DHCP, and Telkom is still using the older one, or Telkom has catered for users still using the older one.

Your router needs to be updated, it's DHCP processing is out of date.

I do recall a change to the DHCP protocol, something along the lines of:
When the ARPA request is sent by the client, the server responds with error, the outdated client stops the transaction. The correct response is that the client must specifically ask for an ip address.

i.e. The DHCP protocol is now correctly implemented by responding with an error when the client asks for the wrong thing, and the client must specifically request an ip address after that error is returned, or bypass the ARPA request.

Windows released a patch for this pre SP2 days, so their pppoe dial-up does handle the "fix".
