I have made an informed decision based on the facts/information presented to me:
1. Does COVID exist?
Yes, I lost an aunt who was in her 70s, not sure exact age but my mother who is much younger than her is 72.
2. Are some people at higher risk than others:
Yes, so far my wife lost an aunt, I lost an aunt, a good friend on mine, lost her father. All three, were elderly, age 65+.
3. What are the chances of South African surviving COVID?
My
calculation put it at 99.831% percent chance of surviving COVID
4. So why should you vaccinate:
From WHO FAQ:
"The current evidence shows that
vaccines provide some protection from infection and transmission, but that protection is less than that for serious illness and death. "
Source: WHO
My take is that until more information is provided, I will take my calculated 99.831% chance that I will survive the virus should I contract it. The vaccine does help prevent death. This is why the elderly was vaccinated as they are the highest at risk of death. Secondly, we still don't know the long term repercussions if any and this should be weighed up against your own risk of dying. I generally trust my immune system to handle the virus and I am quite sure I had it already last year but tested to early after exposure to someone with the disease (i.e. a false negative result). So even if you take the vaccine, it will still knock you out, see first bolded sentence. So the question remain, will it reduce my risk of dying from 0,169% to 0%? I dont think so, so I am comfortable to take the risk.
