Noob needs help

Ok well Im COMPLETELY new to this whole thing...
So I PLEASE need the help from anyone who can give me help.

My problem is I have NO IDEA where to start....now I want to start playing for my bf and I want to surprise him....so I cant really ask him soooo....

Can anyone tell me where I can get the server thing with the channels that you play online...uhmm am I making sense?? Like there's clans and the one channel I know is called War3 or something...
Also I need to know where I get an account.....and where I can download maps......where I can download the thing to play online and on lan....
Please keep in mind that I have NO programs of any sort concerning warcraft on my pc...so Im literally starting from scratch.....
I know you can get the downloads for free somewhere but I dunno how...I dont really wanna pay as I dont have much money but if I REALLY have to I suppose I'll try..

This is...needless to say...interesting.

I hope your BF love you for going through so much hassle to surprise him. I just hope you dont find a side of him you wont like. Perhaps that wont happen anyways.

I have 1 question though, since this is in the World of Warcraft section.
Is it World of Warcraft or Warcraft III The Frozen throne expansion your BF is playing?

Its 2 very different games.

If you mention DoTa, I assume War3 TF.

I think the irc channel to ask information for is #war3 on irc.shadowfire.org and you use Mirc to get there from http://www.mirc.co.za (a freeware application kind of).

As for getting the game, you will probably need to know someone to write the game to CDs for you ect. I'd say steal your BF's Cellphone for 10 seconds or so while he is at a party and write down some of his computer buddies numbers or so.

Hopefully some of them will help you without telling.

I can't say my advice is the best but give it a shot if you dont have anything else to go on.

ps. CDs/DVDs are real cheap so getting the game that way is the easiest in exlpaining I'd say.

Not much of a dota fan but my girlfriend did this for me... :D
Like Tinuva said, first thing you need the game Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne, for online play I think you need original & you are gonna have to update the game to the latest version to play online but I'm sure some smart person out there cracked that too, you'll have to (like Tinuva said) ask around from his computer buddies, next, you're gonna need the actual game dota ;) you can just search this on google, you should easily find a download link

Put that file into the maps folder in the game, it should work.

Once all that is done, if you wanna play online, once your in the game, you just need to create a Battlenet account & walla, you all ready for online dota play ;)

To play W3online you need firstly the game :Warcraft III - The Frozen Throne and it should be updated to version 1.20e. Try getting the patch from www.battle.net. Anyway then you can play on the local server for free. The server is War3.co.za. Go to your BNetgateway editor where War 3 is installed, click on the War3 tab and add a new gateway: name: war3, timezone:2, ip:war3.co.za and set it to your chosen gateway. Then open Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and click on battle.net making sure it connects to your South African gateway. Create an account for yourself in the menus - really easy. ......... And enter. You can get the latest dota map at www.getdota.com (6.36b) and play!
