Any chance of MTN upgrading it's base stations in northriding west of Boundary road? I moved to an estate in that area and the Cell Phone reception is appauling and I can't even get Edge working.

I have had numerous calls to MTN regarding this and nothing resolved. The problem occurs west of Pritchard street. Of course the coverage map shows full HSDPA signal for all of Northriding but I need to stand in my garden just to make a call.

Apparently there is a cell tower on the other side of the hill from which MTN deem to sufficiently cover the area.

Luckily I only use my cellphone as a back up to my primary connection. What I don't understand though is why MTN/Vodacom etc don't start planning now for the expansion that is happening (secure land, permissions etc) before all the whingers start moving in with their cancer fears etc.

I live two blocks away from the dome and get terrible data speeds. It's very frustrating, often I can't even browse because the pages timeout! I would say the average speed is no better than my old dial-up modem! I'm paying a subscription for "UP TO 1.8Mbps" and getting an average of 40Kbps, if I'm lucky. I feel ripped off and will definitely tell all my colleagues and friends not to go with the MTN solution until perhaps it improves.

I used to live in Sharonlea, sort of at the topside of the hill (just behind-ish the bell-airs mall).
I had terrible reception on MTN - logged a call and the technician came out. Whilst on-site he received 2 phone calls and made one and without fail lost the signal too and calls were dropped. Done some tests and said something to the extend that the tower at the shopping centre at the bottom end of Olive & President Fouche and the tower at northgate (?) might be interfering with each other. Also that the 'angle' of the reception footprint might not be correct and something about a 'gain' they could possibly adjust. Whatever. I sold my place before I could be bothered to find the outcome of this.

This is now for voice calls. Edge apparently (which I did not use at the time) had no problems as the signal was excellent. (2005)
