It's probably even higher than that. Testing is slow and a lot of people were tested before the virus was even detectable in their system. You also have some people who hide the fact that they have the virus to avoid the current stigma attached to it and they simply self-diagnose and buy over the counter medication to try and cure themselves (you can buy almost any medication over the counter in China and pharmacists hand out things like antibiotics like candy).

What I was suspecting all along.

At this stage we can only have ballpark figures, but when this has been contained and eradicated, we will find "official" and true numbers of people dead. The true number will most probably be higher than a million.

Well I geuss we all knew that already, for me the important information in that piece is this: the accuracy of the test.

Diagnostic Kit Not Sufficient?

One Chinese researcher suggested that diagnostic kits alone would not be able to detect all the virus-infected patients.

“This disease [coronavirus] has a character, which is not all patients can be detected positive when use nucleic acid testing,” Wang Chen, director of China’s Academy of Medical Sciences and a critical care medicine expert, told state-run broadcaster CCTV on Feb. 5.

Wang explained that although nucleic acid testing is currently the only official test method that Chinese medical staff use to diagnose coronavirus, the result is not accurate.

“Only 30 to 50 percent of the patients present positive,” according to Wang.

He explained that all patients who test positive are infected with the coronavirus, but another 50 to 70 percent of patients are actually infected but cannot be detected by nucleic acid testing.

Reading the above, there exists the possibility after all that the dire consequences mentioned by scientists about the eventual number of deaths might be true

How can Jennifer Zeng's postulation be possible? Could a bird transmit the virus from one locale to another?

I was wondering something similar the other day.
Will skeeters be able to transmit it between people...?

Is the death rate and recovery rate not more important than the infection rate? Since we all get flu and colds and survive?
