The first Nigerian case has been confirmed. I wonder if it will be possible to contain it or whether it will spread widely in Lagos.

If you eat enough garlic nobody will get close enough to give you the virus.

It's flu season in Nigeria. Once this hits Africa proper, politicians are going to be making a killing in aid money.

(Actually 33, but 5 have left the state.)

EDIT: Haven't watched all of it, but apparently the "meat-and-potatoes" starts at around 12mins.

More on those "pandemic bonds"
The pandemic bonds work like this: Investors buy the bonds and receive regular coupons payments in return. If there is an outbreak of disease, the investors don’t get their initial money back. There are two varieties of debt, both scheduled to mature in July 2020. The first bond raised $225 million and features an interest rate of around 7%. Payout on the bond is suspended if there is an outbreak of new influenza viruses or coronaviridae (SARS, MERS). The second, riskier bond raised $95 million at an interest rate of more than 11%. This bond keeps investors’ money if there is an outbreak of Filovirus, Coronavirus, Lassa Fever, Rift Valley Fever, and/or Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever. The World Bank also issued $105 million in swap derivatives that work in a similar way.

1) It is in the interest of most people of the world, including the WHO, to declare this a pandemic.
2) It is MOST DEFINITELY NOT in the interest of the bondholders of these pandemic bonds for this to be declared a pandemic.

Investors are trying to get out of these bonds. Trumptwat was extremely agitated when the CDC raised alarm about COVID-2019.

We don't know who all the bond holders are but these people will certainly try and do anything to prevent the WHO from labeling this a pandemic so that they won't lose their money.

If you want the "real" reason why it is not being called a pandemic:

For a moment thought it was the link to a rickroll. Garlic might only works as a preventive. What were they thinking.

There are 199 South Africans in Wuhan, of which 132 have asked to be evacuated and 13 have chosen not to leave, according to the department of international relations and co-operation. A further 54 people are yet to be traced.

....

The M&G has also reported that the International relations department had requested the South African National Defence Force to assist it with the evacuation. Defence force officials visited Thaba Nchu and the Tempe Military base near Bloemfontein to assess its suitability for purposes of quarantine and screening people for Covid-19.

Phew, luckily no one actually cares about the Free State as it's just the province people drive through on their way to the beach.

Even better, no-one ever has a reason to visit Thaba Nchu.

South Africa to quarantine 132 citizens evacuated from Wuhan

South Africa will evacuate at least 132 South Africans from Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in China, President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced.

He said the government had estimated there were 199 South Africans in Wuhan, of whom 132 had decided to return at this stage.

“These compatriots are currently living under lockdown conditions following the outbreak of the coronavirus,” he said on the night of Thursday 27 February 2020. He added that none of the South Africans – apparently mostly students – had been diagnosed with the virus nor had any exhibited any symptoms of it.

On their return to South Africa, they would be placed in quarantine for 21 days “as an additional precautionary measure”. The government had decided to repatriate them “after due consideration of the circumstances, and following several requests from the families of South Africans in the city”.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko added that some of the South Africans in Wuhan had made direct representations to Pretoria for repatriation.

The Chinese embassy in Pretoria has been assuring South Africa that the South Africans in Wuhan and elsewhere in China are safe, and ambassador Lin Songtian warned last week – citing the experiences of the US, Singapore and Canada – that repatriating nationals risked importing and spreading the virus.
