Totally hearsay. But we were at kids birthday party over the weekend and one of the dads attending is in National Intelligence.

He mentioned that the evacuated citizens will actually be taken to a nice lodge for the 3 week quarantine period. And not be spending the 3 weeks at a military base.

He already knew about the evacuations happening this week.
Because I haven't read anything about it before yesterday, I thought he was just talking BS. But yeah. Might be some truth to his version. And hopefully somebody like the Daily Maverick can investigate it when it seems our tax money is going to be spent wining and dining the evacuees for 3 weeks.

They are South African Citizens. If there is one thing that we should be spending tax money on it is probably this. Otherwise what's the point.

I actually agree with this. Rather have them fed and clothed properly outside of a frigging crisis zone than have Malema's chronies get drunk on R100k whisky for a night.

I'm sure one of the cronies will find a way the profit from this regardless.

Yeah for all we know this is just a story to send 132 ANC members on a paid holiday for 3 weeks.

This is the only reason I find it a bit concerning as opposed to not caring for them at a military base.

Chances are good the lodge, if true, is connected to some big shot crony. Which is the main reason for doing it this way.

US markets took a pounding this week. Worst performance in a week since the 2009 financial crisis.

well now, bring the virus to us then if its not coming here.

i would say keep them a bit longer than a few weeks... there are carriers that do not get sick or show symptoms but infect others.

hopefully the staff taking care of them do not get infected and take the virus out of quarantine... this circus never ceases to amaze

It does not really make a huge difference. It is coming here either way. But I am curious how a government that stated it had absolute confidence in the Chinese authorities' ability to handle this suddenly lost all confidence after its Chinese allies said the numbers are dropping. Definately another corrupt angle to this.

What concerns you guys the most (If you are at all concerned?);
  1. Being infected
  2. Economic fallout
  3. Combination of the above
I'm in camp #2.

True it will come to us one way or another. I think every country that has repatriated citizens from China has reported infections from that group. Any time we can buy before it comes would be welcome for two reasons.

In the time before it hits us infected countries better equipped than us may come up with better containment strategies, or even a vaccine / treatment. Watching the news this morning they were focusing on the massive efforts by USA scientists and biotech companies to deal with corona.

Secondly - maybe give us more time to prepare to deal with it (not much hope there).

By bringing back citizens from China you practically guarantee an outbreak in SA, and wipe out that buffer period.
